The General Manager (GM) provides overall leadership and is accountable for the operational, financial, and service excellence of the retirement residence. The GM ensures high standards of resident care and hospitality, fosters an engaged team culture, drives occupancy and revenue performance, and maintains compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements. As the primary ambassador for the residence, the GM cultivates positive relationships with residents, families, employees, and the broader Sudbury community.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership & Operations
Oversee day-to-day operations across care, hospitality, dining, housekeeping, and maintenance.
Ensure compliance with the Retirement Homes Act, RHRA standards, public health requirements, and internal policies.
Develop and execute annual operating plans aligned with occupancy, revenue, service, and quality goals.
Monitor KPIs (occupancy, NOI, resident satisfaction, staffing metrics) and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
Lead site risk management, emergency preparedness, and business continuity plans.
Resident Experience
Champion a resident-first culture that promotes dignity, respect, safety, and personalized service.
Ensure delivery of engaging life enrichment programming and responsive hospitality services.
Address resident and family feedback promptly; conduct regular resident council / family forums.
Maintain high standards for dining quality, cleanliness, infection prevention and control (IPAC), and safety.
Financial Management
Develop, manage, and forecast annual budgets; monitor performance and implement cost-control strategies.
Own pricing, revenue management, and occupancy growth in partnership with sales/marketing.
Analyze monthly financial statements; identify variances and corrective actions to achieve NOI targets.
Manage vendor contracts and procurement within budget and quality standards.
Team Management
Recruit, onboard, train, and mentor staff to deliver outstanding service across all departments.
Set clear expectations, conduct performance reviews, and manage employee relations effectively.
Promote safety culture, accountability, and professional development; ensure appropriate staffing levels.
Model inclusive leadership and uphold company values and the Ontario Human Rights Code.
Marketing & Community Engagement
Represent the residence within the Sudbury community; build relationships with hospitals, clinics, and referral sources.
Partner with sales to plan and execute events, tours, and campaigns to achieve occupancy targets.
Maintain positive online reputation and collaborate on digital/print marketing assets as needed.
Compliance & Safety
Maintain accurate documentation for audits and inspections; lead corrective action plans.
Ensure health & safety compliance, IPAC, fire code, environmental services, and food safety standards.
Conduct drills and training; chair the Joint Health & Safety Committee (or designate).
QUALIFICATION:
Post-secondary education in Business Administration, Hospitality, Health Care Management, or a related field.
3-5+ years of progressive leadership experience in retirement living, hospitality, or health care.
Demonstrated financial acumen: budgeting, variance analysis, and revenue management.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills; resident and family engagement.
Knowledge of RHRA regulations, Retirement Homes Act, and senior care standards in Ontario is an asset.

WORKING CONDITONS:
Full-time, on-site role.
Flexible schedule with occasional evenings and weekends for events or emergencies.
Participation in on-call rotation may be required.
