DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of the Manager, Facilities Operations, the incumbent performs semi-skilled work in the area of maintenance, repair and general upkeep of College buildings and equipment. This includes interior finishes for all public areas, washrooms and classrooms, furniture and fixture repair, as well as repairs to the building envelope including windows, roofs, doors and door hardware, and wayfinding signage. The incumbent is responsible for scheduling, organizing and performing general maintenance requirements for the college and university facilities and will support or coordinate with certified trades and/or external vendors as needed.

  • Responds to maintenance service requests (work orders) related to the facilities and buildings assigned to the incumbent. The incumbent reviews, prioritizes and performs general maintenance tasks and repairs of semi-skilled nature in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting and grounds maintenance. May also receive requests for emergency clean-up, classroom set-up, and/or moving maintenance supplies, furniture or equipment. Provides customer service follow-up on all client service requests via in person, telephone and or email and documents discussion. Maintains departmental records by documenting completed work in appropriate log books and entering data in CMMS
  • Responsible for preventative maintenance of the assigned facilities, within the scope of this position, including but not limited to inspection of fire extinguishers and emergency shower/eyewash stations, vent/diffuser/grease filter cleaning or replacement, re-lamping, HVAC filter replacement, maintenance of entrance heaters, classroom and office furniture, painting, upkeep of, flag poles and entranceways
  • Supports appropriate college way finding by inspecting signage within assigned buildings; identifying worn or outdated signs; ordering, building and installing new signs in compliance with DC guidelines. May need to troubleshoot technical issues with sign making equipment.
  • Assists skilled trades workers when working in incumbent's area and as requested by Manager or Lead Hand. Operates power hand tools and equipment. Set-up/operation of scaffolding and mechanical lifts in a range of situations while adhering to safety standards
  • Performs other duties as assigned and provides back up coverage to other General Maintenance Workers
  • Conduct inspections and maintain fire and life safety equipment ie. fire extinguishers
  • Prepare recommendations for the improvement of fire prevention, life safety hazards, and needed changes and/or additions to campus facilities
  • Interpret applicable fire and life safety codes and regulations
QUALIFICATIONS: * A one-year certificate in Building Operations/Maintenance, Trade Fundamentals or a trades based certificate.
  • Minimum of three years related practical experience with working knowledge of general concepts in areas of HVAC, plumbing, carpentry and electrical.
  • Experience reading blue prints and/or shop drawings.
  • Well-developed problem-solving skills in order to identify problems, determine possible solutions and select the appropriate action.
  • Able to cope under high pressure and constant changes in priorities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to work well both as a team and independently.

Hourly Rate: Starting Rate: $28.56; Four Year Rate: $33.11

Hours: 40 hours per week (1) one hour lunch; Mon - Fri (shifts between 1:00pm - 10:00pm)
