Irving Shipbuilding Inc. is seeking a Gas Free Specialist.

The Gas Free Specialist will act as the gas free certification subject matter expert for all ISI Production and Facilities/maintenance operations in confined spaces and hot work operations in designated areas. They will ensure that suitable risk assessments are performed, and all hazards are controlled, and communicated on the gas free certificate, prior to any work commencing for gas free certificate required operations and areas. Will coach and educate production members on confined space entry and hot work operations, ensuring that all documentation in completed and all applicable procedures, standards and regulations are observed.

This is a permanent full-time role based in Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia. The primary language of work is English. Qualifications:

  • Education: Occupational Health & Safety certification or diploma preferred
  • Experience Required: 2-5 years of applicable safety experience in an industrial environment
  • Authorized Gas Testing experience considered an asset
  • First aid and emergency response experience would be an asset
All successful applicants must meet requirements for Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

Key Responsibilities:
  • Calibrating/maintaining the instruments used for atmospheric testing Gas Monitors
  • Actively control and monitor gas testing operations in their assigned areas, with flexibility to move around site as required to meet business needs. Required at Shipyard and Marine Fab and Woodside
  • Entering confined space/compartments to test atmospheres and evaluate the space for hazards such as flammables and combustibles
  • Assessing confined areas for any atmospheric hazards in defined spaces such as lack of oxygen or hazardous gasses
  • Carry out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment before certifying activities and confined space entry
  • Select appropriate control measures that are required within the confined space and hot work operations
  • Ensuring that all regulatory requirements are met within the realm of confined space and hot work Provincial regulations, CSA Standards and ISI procedures
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate confined space permits and documentation. Ensure data integrity and accurate reporting
  • Ensure that local exhaust ventilation is being used appropriately where required in confined spaces
  • Determine the frequency of testing required for a given area
  • Conduct all confined space/hot work inspections and audits
  • Provide subject matter expertise to production leadership on confined space, entry and operations
  • Maintaining the Authorized Gas Testing qualification
