The Cashier works in the Front Shop and assists customers with their purchases while helping to build brand loyalty and provide excellent customer service.
Customer Service
Greets customers in a friendly and welcoming manner
Ensures that all customers within sightline have been served and/or approached
Accompanies customers to appropriate sections when necessary
Provides prompt, direct and courteous service to all customers (potential and actual)
Assists with customers' questions, needs and purchases and refers to appropriate staff when necessary
Consults the sales flyers to help properly respond to customer questions
Coordinates gift wrapping for customer's purchases when requested
Cultivates a trust-based relationship with all customers
Answers telephone calls by the 3rd ring and filters them by subject matter:
o Store Hours
o Prescription refills
o Front Shop order
o Pharmacist Inquiry
o Photo Developing inquiry
o Home Health Care inquiry
o Accounting inquiry
Resolves customer complaints and requests for merchandise returns and seeks assistance from management if unsure or when necessary
Actively listens to suggestions and comments from customers
Constantly monitors store activity to prevent shoplifting
Obtains assistance from Front Shop Manager when there are any problems/issues with the POS system, Debit/Credit machines, etc. If the Front Shop Manager is unavailable, problems/issues should be directed to McKesson
Maintains a clean and professional appearance at all times (pressed uniform, name tag, good hygiene)
Ensures all confidential information is not exposed to the public and complies with company's Confidentiality Agreement
Financial Transactions
Collects payments by accepting cash, cheque, debit, credit or charge payments from customers; making change for cash customers
Obtains approval from accounting department when cashing government issued cheques for customers
Obtains approval from accounting department when charging to customer accounts that are flagged
Coordinates monetary pick-ups if/when the amount of bills in the till reaches a certain level (usually around mid-afternoon)
Balances and reconciles till at the end of the shift and/or night
Collects Manufacturer coupons that have been submitted by customers and sends them away to get monetary return
Managing the Visual Image of the Front Shop
Takes direction from the Front Shop Manager and offers suggestions with regards to the placement of regular stock and special displays and ensures there is a sufficient amount of merchandise on the shelves
Ensures the appearance of the store is visually appealing including: adequate spacing and walking room in the aisles, clean floors, shopping basket availability, and section maintenance (i.e. facing, dusting, monitoring expiries, etc.)
Identifies products nearing expiry to be set aside for clear out and/or sales
Puts up tags that identify items on sale in weekly/monthly ads and removes the tags when the sale is over
Communicates pricing errors to the Front Shop Manager
Assists with price changes and/or markdowns for merchandise on the shelves
Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations
Lotto
Operates lottery terminal selling online and scratch tickets, as well as Lotto gift cards
Prior to a sale, confirms that the customer purchasing the lotto item meets the legal age requirement
Scans customers' tickets to validate
Assists customers who choose to use the self-scanner to validate their tickets
Activates new stock when putting it on display for sale
Replenishes stock regularly and ensures there is always plenty of stock on display for sale
Returns and deactivates stock when necessary (i.e. end of season, damaged stock, or as per Lotto company requests)
Teamwork
Assists Accounting department with:
o Statements - stuffs, seals, stamps and mails out monthly statements
o Nursing Charges - charges to customer accounts
Assists with shredding, garbage and recycling when necessary
Participates in training and integration for new staff upon request from the Front Shop Manager
Assists with the monthly Seniors Day and Customer Appreciation Day (i.e. set-up, clean up, etc.)
Works together with co-workers to create a harmonious work environment
Contributes to the front shop team goals
All other tasks required by management
Qualifications
2+ years' customer service experience working in a retail setting
Experience using a POS system
Strong level of professionalism
Strong attention to detail
Strong problem-solving skills
General math skills
