Position Summary
The Fresh Produce Purchaser is responsible for the strategic sourcing, negotiation, and procurement of fresh fruits and vegetables to meet the organization's quality, cost, and delivery objectives. This role requires a thorough understanding of produce markets, supplier capabilities, and food safety standards to ensure consistent supply and optimal value.
Key Responsibilities
Procurement Strategy & Execution
+ Source and procure fresh produce from approved local, regional, and international suppliers.
+ Negotiate pricing, terms, and delivery schedules to achieve cost efficiencies and ensure product availability.
+ Monitor market trends, seasonal fluctuations, and commodity pricing to inform purchasing decisions.
Supplier Management
+ Establish and maintain strong relationships with growers, distributors, and cooperatives.
+ Conduct supplier evaluations and audits to ensure compliance with quality and safety standards.
+ Resolve supplier-related issues in a timely and professional manner.
Inventory & Logistics Coordination
+ Collaborate with warehouse and logistics teams to manage inventory levels and ensure timely deliveries.
+ Optimize stock rotation and minimize spoilage through effective planning and forecasting.
+ Maintain accurate records of purchase orders, delivery schedules, and supplier performance.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
+ Ensure all procured produce meets internal quality specifications and regulatory requirements.
+ Work closely with quality control teams to address non-conformities and implement corrective actions.
+ Stay informed of industry regulations, certifications, and food safety protocols (e.g., HACCP, GAP).
Reporting & Analysis
+ Prepare regular reports on procurement activity, cost trends, and supplier metrics.
+ Analyze purchasing data to identify opportunities for cost savings and process improvements.
+ Support budgeting and forecasting efforts in collaboration with finance and operations teams.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in supply chain management, Agribusiness, Food Science, or a related field.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in produce procurement or food purchasing.
Strong negotiation, analytical, and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency in ERP systems and Microsoft Office Suite.
Knowledge of produce seasonality, grading standards, and perishability.
Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.
