About Our Opportunity

As the Forest Inventory Field Supervisor responsible for the execution and maintenance of integrated continuous Field Forest Inventory and Registry of Buyers Programs for the Province.

The Field Forest Inventory, Permanent Sample Plot (PSP) program determines the status, location, and condition of the timber and non-timber resources with additional descriptions based upon the biophysical and ecological conditions of forest lands.

The provincial Registry of Buyers Program manages the regulatory framework provided by the Registration and Statistical Returns Regulations. This includes responsibility for oversight of the Wood Acquisition Plan process as outlined in the Forest Sustainability Regulations to ensure a collaborative approach for a sustainable forest with woodlot owners and industry.

You will also be responsible for:

  • The supervision, training, and setting and evaluating performance targets for staff engaged in these programs.
  • Providing direction and providing assistance to permanent and seasonal employees to assure the remeasurement of approximately 650 permanent sample plots annually across the province.
  • Execute and maintain Quality Control and Quality Assurance for the programs for which they are responsible.
  • Working closely with those within the Forest Inventory Section and others within the department to ensure the monitoring sampling methods and specifications along with quality control and quality assurance programs are fully understood, correctly interpreted, and applied.
  • Working closely with industry and departmental staff to provide support and direction for the Registry of Buyers Program
  • Maintaining the necessary field equipment and fleet of vehicles for the staff
The position reports to the Manager, Forest Inventory.

Primary Accountabilities

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor\'s Degree in Forestry plus 6 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Additional requirements for this position include:
  • Good leadership skills and a positive attitude, as well as a friendly diplomatic approach for working with the public, industry, landowners and colleagues.
  • Have and be able to demonstrate a good understanding of the Forest Inventory and the Registry of Buyers Programs.
  • Certified in Nova Scotia Forest Ecosystem Classification (FEC); and be able to demonstrate these abilities.
  • Be able to identify forest tree species, woody vegetation species throughout the year and identify ground cover and the soil types of Nova Scotia
  • Have and be able to demonstrate your ability collect field data with mensuration equipment with accuracy and precision.
  • A background and knowledge of silviculture treatments and be familiar with monitoring procedures for auditing and reporting of site and program results.
  • Be proficient in ArcGIS.
  • Be able to demonstrate your navigation skills.
  • Be physically capable of traveling through the wood for long distances with 45 lbs packs under all weather condition and all terrain.
  • Must have a valid NS driver\'s license (minimum Class 5) and clean driving record with access to a motor vehicle.
Other Assets would include:
  • Current, documented training in First Aid, WHIMIS, ATV operation, Pleasure Operator Card, Canoe use, Radio use, Respect in the workplace, Violence in the workplace, Bear Awareness, Defensive Driving
  • Knowledge of Surveying
We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

The majority of the time during the field season is spent working in the woodlands throughout Nova Scotia and the candidate must also be prepared to spend some time away from home, working outside in all weather and challenging working conditions.

Pay Grade: PR 17

Salary Range: $3,091.70 - $3,631.17 Bi-Weekly
