Major Responsibilities:

Reporting to a supervisor the incumbent will be required to direct and co-ordinate the work of carpenters and painter in the construction, installation, repair and maintenance projects of City of Toronto buildings and Corporate facilities, to use Carpenter Shop Equipment, hand and power tools, city vehicle, various office equipment ( example: iPad, iPhone ,laptop, computer).
  • Directs activities of Carpenters and Painter engaged in maintenance and general construction of City owned buildings and corporate facilities. Ensures that work complies to specifications, City By-Laws and Building Code Standards.
  • Directs contractors in work/alteration related to building maintenance and new installations.
  • Monitors work of contractors. Inspects work in progress to ensure completion according to standards.
  • Confers with Supervisor and Departmental staff regarding the scheduling of new installations and the maintenance of existing facilities. Prepares daily work schedules.
  • Responds to emergency repair requests. Determines work required and dispatches staff to job location. Attends site.
  • Performs field inspections of job sites with plans and checks work progress, safety, personnel performance to ensure installations comply with plans and specifications. Confers with Departmental staff regarding changes to specifications.
  • Confers with Supervisor regarding long term planning for construction requirements.
  • Investigates and prepares reports and summaries on operations issues.
  • Provides on the job training and instructions to staff. Monitors health and safety in the workplace.
  • Meets with groups and provides recommendations, information, equipment and staff to prepare set up for special events programs.
  • Attends meetings, liaises and coordinates work with other Department representatives or contractors.
  • Prepares requisition forms for materials/supplies.
  • Completes employee time cards detailing location and hours worked.
  • Responds to inquiries and complaints from staff and the public.
  • Estimates the material and labour required for projects and maintenance programs and prepares requisitions and purchase orders for materials and equipment.
  • Estimates material and labour to provide an accurate project quotation costing for customers for budgeting purposes.
  • Communicates with Departmental staff, outside agencies and public.
  • Provides budget and purchasing support. Investigates and prepares reports on operational issues.
  • Maintains material and inventory control for mechanical supplies and material for internal Departmental recoveries.
  • Maintains integrity of master control system for operating departments and facilities.
Key Qualifications:

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:
  • Must be licensed in the Province of Ontario as a Qualified Journeyperson Carpenter with a Certificate of Apprenticeship issued by Skilled Trades Ontario
  • Must possess and be able to maintain a valid Province of Ontario, Class "G" Driver's License and must have or shall be required to obtain required City permit for assigned vehicle(s) and equipment.
  • Extensive work experience in maintenance and construction projects within industrial facilities, commercial institutions.
  • Considerable experience with architectural drawings and sketches.
  • Extensive experience of Keyway Access Systems (example: Best, Assa and Medeco).
  • Extensive Experience using of work order systems such as SAP or other similar work order systems.
You must also have:
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising unionized technical/trades staff both in house and contracts.
  • Demonstrated experience in directing staff on day to day scheduling.
  • Working knowledge of common building operational policies and related codes.
  • Able to plan and organize work with minimum direction.
