Job Description

Foreperson - Landscape Construction (Unionized)Reporting to the Project Supervisor(s), the Foreperson leads a full crew of skilled and general labour (including a Lead Hand) to execute the construction of landscape projects in accordance with design plans provided. They are responsible for the full and effective operation at site, including people leadership, health & safety and ensuring the crews have the equipment and materials they require.
The Foreperson will be responsible for reporting directly to project sites using a company-provided vehicle and may be required to move between job sites on a daily basis.Responsibilities: *
CREW LEADERSHIP (45% of time): *

  • Assign daily objectives to the crew in order to deliver completed projects on, or ahead of, schedule
  • Mentor and motivate Lead Hands, Skilled and General Labourers to ensure crew effectiveness
  • Represent and reinforce the values of the organization
  • Supervise crew in the safe handling and use of equipment
  • Ensure crew members have required training/certification for operation
  • Track, approve and report attendance on a daily basis
  • Performance manage attendance or performance issues of crew
  • Ensure crew members are wearing PPE and adhering to D&G's Health & Safety procedures
  • Communicate any company updates to the crew on behalf of Supervisor's, HR, Fleet Manager, etc.
  • Provide input and participate in annual performance reviews for the crew
SITE OPERATION (45% of time):
  • Apply knowledge of landscape construction processes to ensure quality standards are achieved
  • Review and ensure daily progress objectives are on track
  • Plan and manage the schedule including arrangements for weather-related interruptions
  • Place order to Dispatch by 3:30pm for the following day's material and float requirements
  • Maintain and report Health & Safety on-site, including site inspections and incident reports
  • Ensure the site is inspected, properly prepped each morning and ready for the day
  • Installation of hardscaping, topsoil, plantings, sodding, and associated maintenance/pruning
  • Coordinate arrival/installation of hardscaping structures (e.g. benches, garbage cans, installations, etc.)
EQUIPMENT CO-ORDINATION (10% of time):
  • Ensure availability of small tools and equipment on-site (e.g. quick cuts, jumping jacks, etc.)
  • Ensure availability of day-to-day items (e.g. gloves, safety glasses, etc.)
  • Ensure equipment is in safe working order and maintained daily (e.g. greased)
  • Ensure daily completion of circle checks on any equipment in excess of 10 hp
  • Work with Dispatch and Fleet Manager to ensure non-operational or unsafe equipment is serviced and substitutes are available to minimize down time
Requirements:
  • 1-2 years in Construction Supervision (preferably Landscape Construction)
  • Proven success understanding project scheduling/planning
  • Sound knowledge of design drawings
  • Ability to maximize efficiency (crew, work planning, etc.)
  • Knowledge of landscape construction materials, processes and equipment
  • Adaptability to quickly respond to changing demands
  • Effective ability to communicate and influence people in differing situations
  • Self-starter with the foresight to plan proactively
  • Willingness to travel between sites, as required
