About the job

In this role, you will:



perform gasoline and diesel engine maintenance and repairs including: wheel balancing tire rotation and repair, shock replacement, brake resurfacing, engine analysis and tune-up, electric and acetylene welding where applicable, engine shampoo and high-powered steam cleaning perform driving assignments as required make arrangements for scheduled maintenance and warranty work demonstrate proper methods to inmates, assigning and checking work ensure security, welfare and safety of inmates in the shop and during escort assess inmates' conduct and progress in order to submit reports including misconducts as needed

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements



must possess a valid class 'G' driver's license or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario Small Engine Certification or Class A license, or equivalent experience

Technical expertise:



demonstrated experience and knowledge of vehicles/ small engines, automotive technology, mechanical repair practices, techniques and maintenance for a variety equipment knowledge of fleet management practices and repair operations to determine work requirements, estimate/negotiate labour and parts expenditures knowledge of procurement and disposal practices to receive new equipment and prepare equipment for disposal

Analytical skills:



analytical and evaluative skills to determine the fastest and most cost-effective way to carrying out repairs based on location, resources required and estimate parts and service costs ability to identify services needs and deficiencies of recurring equipment problems, and recommend new equipment technologies for possible ministry application problem solving skills to resolve discrepancies with private repair facilities (e.g. excessive bills, substandard repairs, untimely completion) mathematical skills to estimate the cost of repairs and maintain accurate vehicle logs

Communication and interpersonal skills:



communication and interpersonal skills to deal with repair facilities, clients, contractors and manufacturers to discuss repair requirements/needs, quality of work and/or negotiate price written communication skills to complete inspection reports, cost estimates, seasonal maintenance plans, equipment reports and logs

Organizational skills:



organization and planning skills to coordinate fleet activities, develop seasonal maintenance plans and arrange equipment repair and inspection schedules

Computer proficiency:



proficiency with common office productivity software, such as electronic mail, spreadsheets and databases to maintain accurate records for inspections and audits, generate reports and logs to ensure accuracy and completeness
