The primary duties of the Fisheries Field Technician will involve assisting with fostering positive relationships within the fishing community. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, along with a professional phone demeanor and comfort in engaging with the public. The technician must be highly organized, capable of prioritizing tasks, and able to work independently while also collaborating effectively as part of a team.
One of the sampling programs will include verifying weights and condition of lobsters for quality, the completion of scientific data sheets, entering data into a spreadsheet or database, and assisting in the preparation of results for presentation to project participants and FSRS members.
They may also participate in the development and implementation of other data collection projects. The individual will need to be comfortable on a commercial fishing vessel for full days in various weather conditions. The individual will also be responsible for distribution and track distribution of scientific equipment to FSRS members and maintain equipment.
Experience and Knowledge
Field of Study - Marine Biology or Biology preferred.
Must have reliable vehicle and valid driver's licence.
Must be willing to conduct sampling on commercial fishing vessels
Must be willing to go to lobster plants and wharves to conduct sampling.
Experience using databases/spreadsheets, in particular Access and Excel.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Initiative and motivation.
Able to work independently and be organized.
Able to keep accurate and detailed documentation of work.
Competency with Word.
Basic knowledge of fish biology.
Knowledge or experience in sampling procedures.
Familiarity with fisheries research and the fishing industry an asset.
Marine Emergency Duties (MED) training an asset

The work term will provide the employee with practical work experience in a multidisciplinary setting which will better equip the student to obtain meaningful employment upon graduation. The applicant will gain experience in:
