Position Title: Fire Specialist

Team and Location: STaR - Burnaby, BC

Position Summary:

The Fire Specialist is accountable for safety of personnel and assets at the Burnaby Refinery, emergency disaster response including fire suppression and first aid and disaster response. This team is also responsible for site security within the facility to ensure that we are following Company, Provincial and Federal rules and regulations. Works closely with the RCMP and the Security contractor to mitigate threat against site or or site security issues as they arise. Maintains any applicable Refinery Instructions', plans and coordinates any audits required by Transport Canada, Corporate Security or US Homeland Security. Facilitation of security contracts with contracted site security and site access control/camera maintenance. Ownership of security related improvement projects as a result of security audits, ownership of the security OE process. Maintain the security contingency plan(s).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspects and maintains all large emergency equipment that is assigned to the Refinery. This includes but not limited to fire trucks, quick response trucks, hazmat trailer, SCBA trailer and 4X4 pickups. This includes all RI relevant to large and small emergency equipment.
  • Inspects and maintains all small emergency equipment that is assigned to the Refinery. This includes but not limited to extinguishers, monitors, hoses, nozzles and SCBA's.
  • Participates in safety related training, hazmat training, Transportation of Dangerous Goods training, rescue training, fire training and emergency exercise activities. Provides recommendations to supervisor for additions to our training.
  • Contributes to evaluation of new technologies and equipment to determine if appropriate for the Refinery. Maintains all the contracts for 3rd party certification for extinguisher, hoses and SCBA's.
Delivers safety-related and emergency response training, including hazmat training, boat training, rescue training, fire training, respirator fit testing, site indoctrinations (as required) and participates in drills/exercises to ensure that the participants are set up for success and monitor their capabilities of the response team.

Serves on Refinery teams as support for fire protection, emergency response, Incident Command.

Fosters emergency response among the operating crews via discussion and pre-fire plan development.

Provides safety leadership & motivation through conversation and visible actions. Resolves potential safety issues that may arise involving a contractor and/or company personnel.

Qualifications and Skills:
  • Minimum Grade 12. Preference in post secondary training in fire suppression techniques
  • Minimum 2 years experience as a Municipal Firefighter, or certification in National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 & 1002.
  • The employee must obtain a:
  • Class 3 drivers license with air endorsement
  • Transportation of dangerous goods certificate
  • Hazardous materials technician certificate
  • Firefighting 1081 certification
  • Marine Pleasure Craft Operator Card/ license
  • Small Domestic Vessel Basic Safety (formerly MED A-3)
  • Industrial first aid certification.
