Position: Fire InspectorDivision: Saskatoon FireDepartment: Public Relations and Community Risk ReductionTerm: 1 Temporary Full Time position(s) available for approximately 24 months.Closing Date: 08/11/2024Labour Group: IAFF 80Posting: 3523Job SummaryUnder supervision of the Risk Reduction Officer, this position performs technical inspection, enforcement, cause and origin investigations.Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conducts inspections of buildings, structures, and places in an assigned area to identify and locate fire hazards and to ensure compliance with the Fire Department Bylaws, Acts, Codes and other legislation where applicable.
  • Inspects building life safety systems, water protection systems, fire warning systems, fire pumps and other protection systems to ensure compliance with the City Bylaw and National Fire Code of Canada.
  • Issues corrective notices, letters, tickets and orders under the terms of the appropriate legislation and as directed.
  • Supervises the installation and removal of underground tanks in the assigned area.
  • Enters inspection data into the designated software program and electronic filing system.
  • Prepares and provides evidence, appears in court and appeal hearings.
  • Reviews and interprets technical reports and plans to ensure fire protection systems comply with the required Codes and Standards.
  • Reviews and establishes building occupant loads.
  • Provides training and education to internal and external stakeholders, as required.
  • Performs fire investigations as assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
QualificationsEducation, Training and Experience Requirements:
  • Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Fire Inspector Level I (NFPA 1031) IFSAC and/or ProBoard certification.
  • Four years\' experience in the enforcement of bylaws and codes or with a fire department. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the area of fire prevention and inspection.
  • Certified or ability to achieve the following certification:
  • Hazardous Material Awareness and Operations (NFPA 472 or NFPA 1072) IFSAC and/or ProBoard certification
  • Fire Inspector Level II (NFPA 1031) IFSAC and/or ProBoard certification
  • Fire Investigator (NFPA 1033) IFSAC and/or ProBoard certification
  • Fire Services Instructor Level I (NFPA 1041) IFSAC and/or ProBoard certification
  • Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver\'s Licence
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Fire Department functions and procedures
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable Provincial legislation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the National Fire and Building Codes and applicable standards.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of investigative procedures, fire suppression strategies and tactics.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, including preparing and presenting formal information and decision reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships with other employees, civic officials, representatives of other agencies and the public.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to exercise good judgement in the application of fire prevention standards.
  • Ability to adapt to changing technology.
  • Physical ability to perform the assigned duties
