The City of Mississauga is seeking a dynamic and visionary Fire Chief to lead Mississauga Fire & Emergency Services (MFES), a progressive, all-hazards fire department committed to protecting life, property, and the environment. With over 800 dedicated professionals and a growing, diverse population nearing 800,000, MFES is a leader in public safety innovation, community engagement, and emergency response.
As Fire Chief, you will oversee strategic planning, operational excellence, workforce development, and inter-agency collaboration. You will be responsible for delivering high-quality emergency services while advancing the City's strategic goals and ensuring alignment with the Fire Master Plan and the City's Strategic Plan.
Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Planning
Develop and implement strategic service plans that enhance community safety and quality of life (suppression and non-suppression)
Lead the ongoing review and execution of the Fire Master Plan, addressing key focus areas such as intensification, response times, public education, internal training, NFPA certification, and emergency medical services
Align departmental priorities with the City's Strategic Plan and Fire Master Plan
Design and deliver sustainable business plans that ensure responsible emergency service delivery
Operational Excellence
Drive continuous improvement and innovation across all service areas
Deliver operational excellence and continue to enhance MFES's involvement in the community
Identify and implement Fire Master Plan recommendations and workplans to meet evolving service requirements
Establish emergency service targets to guide efficient resource allocation
Oversee departmental LEAN projects and performance improvement initiatives
Workforce Development & Labour Relations
Lead a high-performing team through mentorship, training, and strategic workforce planning
Foster a culture of professional growth, safety, and accountability by setting performance expectations and ensuring adherence to safety and service standards
Actively engage with Association representatives to negotiate agreements, and uphold collective bargaining obligations within a respectful and productive workplace
Ensure succession planning and employee engagement are embedded in operational strategies
Stakeholder Engagement & Governance
Build strong relationships with Mayor and Council, boards, community groups, and inter-agency partners
Provide timely updates and briefings on strategic initiatives, budgetary and service changes and challenges
Lead public policy development aligned with corporate standards, emerging trends and community safety goals
Review and update service agreements and regulatory bylaws to reflect legislative and community changes.
Skills and Qualifications

Graduate of the Ontario Fire College or equivalent education and experience
Proven leadership experience within fire or emergency services
Strong political acuity and public administration expertise
Demonstrated success in labour relations and workforce management
Exceptional communication, presentation, and media relations skills
Financial acumen and comfort with municipal budgeting and accounting
Certified in Emergency Management, CPR, and First Aid
Deep understanding of relevant legislation, including but not limited to:
+ Fire Prevention and Protection Act
+ Occupational Health and Safety Act
+ Ontario Fire Code
+ Ontario Building Code
+ Ontario Emergency Management Act
+ City of Mississauga Bylaws, policies and procedures related to MFES
+ Collective Agreements and Service Agreements (Halton Hills, GTAA, Milton, JFCC) Availability for emergency response 24/7; resilience in high-pressure environments; long working hours; and other working conditions such as exposure to sights / odours at emergency scenes; listening and observing details. Primarily office environment; may be called on at any time to emergency scene
Valid Ontario Class G or greater Driver's Licence with a driving record acceptable to the City
A Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3) will be required of the successful candidate, at their own expense, to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted
Jobholder may be asked to perform other duties which are not necessarily listed but are in keeping with the general purpose of the role. Other tasks may be assigned based on organizational needs.
