Job SummaryAs part of Financial Planning and Operations, the Financial Reporting department prepares all internal management reporting and all external compliance financial reporting for the University of Victoria and its consolidated entities. The department is responsible for the production and delivery of reliable, relevant, accurate and timely financial statements, and reports for both internal management purposes and external users.Reporting to the Manager, Financial Reporting, and working as a member of a team of Financial Accountants, this position's primary responsibility is to support the production of the monthly, quarterly and year-end financial statements, working papers and reports for the university and its related entities.Key accountabilities for this role include:
  • Performing accounting functions including review and posting of journal entries, and review of transactions in order to detect and correct errors
  • Administrating finance related system access
  • Overseeing financial system and performing upgrade testing
  • Training and ongoing user support to staff across the university
  • Working with senior team members to prepare and analyze financial statements.
  • Coordination of statutory and other compliance processes
  • Participation in special projects
  • Additional duties for endowment and pension accounting if required
  • Other duties of similar scope
This position applies Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) with emphasis on Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS). As part of the Financial Reporting department, the position is also assigned other financial reporting duties of the university.Job RequirementsThis position requires an undergraduate degree and the pre-requisites towards an accounting designation (CPA), with an expectation that the designation will be completed within a reasonable time-frame (3-4 years), plus:
  • Three years of pre-designation, professional accounting experience and applied knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles with emphasis on knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS).
  • Experience in a large, diverse and sophisticated accounting environment.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.In addition, this position requires:
  • Excellent organizational skills.

  • Advanced computer proficiency
  • Ability to facilitate corporate training.
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
