The Municipal District of Taber is seeking an organized, self-motivated individual who has a natural passion for numbers, and who has a collaborative, energetic, can-do attitude to join our diverse team as Finance Coordinator.

Reporting directly to the Director of Corporate Services, this full-time position is responsible for the tax system, annual budgeting and financial reporting, with expertise in property tax and financial and accounting services, and an eagerness to learn about municipal processes.

Key Responsibilities
Using exceptional analytical capabilities and attention to detail, you will be responsible for key aspects of property tax maintenance and reporting for the MD of Taber, along with participating in the creation of the Municipality\xe2\x80\x99s annual budget and financial reporting. This fast-paced role is looking for an independent and creative thinker in financial analysis, who seeks continuous improvement in the MD of Taber\xe2\x80\x99s accounting and business systems, processes, and reporting. This position will identify performance, efficiency and innovation improvements on behalf of all departments and prepare various financial analyses.

Other key responsibilities include but are not limited to are:
  • Maintains the property tax system by setting up tax rolls, assessment codes, mill rates, and property taxes, and by maintaining property ownership information provided by Alberta land titles.
  • Assists in the preparation of the MD of Taber\xe2\x80\x99s annual budget and participates budget process by collaborating with departments and other Corporate Services staff.
  • Prepares financial analysis and presents information to various audiences.
  • Aids the management regarding the design and implementation of effective control-related policies and procedures.
  • Assists in the preparation of the MD of Taber\xe2\x80\x99s audited financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). This includes the preparation of various reconciliations, audit file working papers, and coordination of all supporting documentation from various stakeholders within and outside Corporate Services.
  • Assists and trains other staff in more complex reporting and reconciliations, providing backup and assistance for other finance positions as needed.
  • Process journal entries for various transfers and adjustments.
  • Provides recommendations for process improvements and assist with implementation and provides training.
  • Executes work plan projects to improve and implement financial management systems, integrations, and business processes. Translates business requirements into system functional specifications for various systems that support the MD of Taber\xe2\x80\x99s finances (Serenic, Questica, etc). Documents finance systems functional requirements, designing and prototyping solutions, and completing full lifecycle testing.
  • Participates in the maintenance and continued improvements to the reporting of Tangible Capital Assets (TCA) for the Corporation.
  • Supports best practices in financial reporting by collaborating with departments and other Corporate Services staff.
  • Assist in other projects as a financial resource.
  • Any other related duty as assigned.

Requirements
  • Diploma in accounting, business or a related field.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of progressive experience accounting at an intermediate level and advanced experience using financial, spreadsheet and database applications.
  • Working knowledge of Public Sector Account Board (PSAB) requirements is an asset.
  • Experience in cost accounting and able to demonstrate strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to communicate (oral and written) at a high level of proficiency.
  • A consultative and collaborative approach to working with clients and other team members.
  • Excellent communication and public relations skills; positive customer service philosophy.
  • An understanding of Microsoft software such as Excel and Word would be an asset.
