Summary
We're hiring a Fabrication Department Lead Hand to run day-to-day fit-up and welding operation, coaching a skilled crew, coordinating work with Production/Engineering, upholding safety/quality, and hitting delivery targets.
Responsibilities
Lead, schedule, and coach a team of fitters/welders to meet throughput, quality, and on-time delivery objectives in a fast-paced custom fabrication environment.
Plan and assign work, monitor progress, first-pass yield, and clear bottlenecks to keep jobs on schedule.
Enforce OHSA-compliant safety practices and PPE use, ensuring safe operation of overhead cranes, forklifts, and rigging.
Oversee welding operations and quality for GMAW (hardwire/solid), MCAW (metal-core), and FCAW (flux-core) processes, including fit-up, tacking, and visual/dimensional verification.
Read/interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and GD&T; guide correct jigs/fixtures, sequencing, and distortion control to achieve spec compliance.
Coordinate with Production/Engineering on priorities, and maintain accurate time, material, and traceability records in ERP (JobBOSS).
Maintain housekeeping/5S standards, report hazards, and drive corrective and preventive actions for continuous improvement.
Manage consumables and shop inventory levels, request materials, and ensure tooling and equipment are serviceable and calibrated.
Qualifications
7+ years in custom metal fabrication with 3+ years leading crews of ~10-30 tradespeople in a shop setting.
Advanced blueprint reading and weld-symbol fluency, with strong measurement and fit-up skills including jigs/fixtures.
Proficient with FCAW/SMAW/GMAW/SAW processes and related shop practices (e.g., gouging/arc-air when required).
Demonstrated OHSA knowledge and safe operation experience with overhead cranes, forklifts, and rigging.
Strong production planning, problem-solving, and communication skills with a "right-the-first-time" quality mindset.
Comfortable with ERP(JobBOSS), basic proficiency with spreadsheet and maintaining time/material/traceability accuracy.
CWB Welding Supervisor (or equivalent) is an asset; additional certifications are considered an advantage.
Valid WHMIS 2015; overhead-crane and basic rigging certifications are strong assets if not current.
