InnoTech Alberta is seeking an innovative and collaborative Mechanical Engineer with expertise in general mechanical engineering to join its Advanced Materials & Monitoring Division. The Mechanical Engineer role will provide support to various team's applied research and industrial client projects. This position will fulfill needs for technical collabloration across InnoTech Alberta divisions and will be responsible for mechanical design, analysis, and general project management.

Reporting to the Supervisor of the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Lab, this role supports both external and internal stakeholders by enhancing our business operation services. You will contribute to client project execution and new capacity development, including the design and modification of pilot plants, new equipment, and capital projects. This is a dynamic opportunity to apply a broad range of mechanical engineering skills and knowledge in a collaborative lab environment.


Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:


• Apply innovative technical mechanical engineering expertise and capabilities to:
+ Develop models and drawings using computer aided design tools for prototyping new equipment, modular testing apparatus, and small pressure systems.
+ Evaluate material stresses, conduct heat transfer analyses, evaluate failure conditions, and optimize designs using appropriate mechanical engineering software and tools (e.g. finite element analysis, and computational fluid dynamics analysis).
+ Provide consultation and support for mechanical design (e.g. compressors, pumps, engines) for the various systems within InnoTech Alberta.
+ Develop presentations, reports, and engineering documents (e.g. BDEP, FEED, CWP, EWP, IWP, etc.).
+ Authenticate professional work products and peer-review safety documents.
• Lead and manage engineering projects (e.g. new R&D capacity development, pilot plant builds & modification), ensuring:
+ Definition and tracking of project schedule, budget, and scope of work, including stakeholder engagement and progress reporting.
+ Quality outcomes and timely delivery.
+ Coordination of tasks with project team members.
• Support business development by creating project proposals and collaborating with both internal and external clients.
• Mentor junior staff, providing guidance and supporting their professional development.






The position will be based primarily in InnoTech Alberta's facility at the Edmonton Research and Development Park but occasionally may work at InnoTech Alberta's facility at Devon and Vegreville. Travel to partners' site may also be involved.





Qualifications and skills we are looking for:


• Education and Experience Requirements:
+ Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (advanced degrees considered an asset).
+ Strong understanding of mechanical systems, equipment design, and fabrication processes.
+ Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with APEGA (or eligible for licensing with APEGA).
+ Minimum of 6 years of practical experience in mechanical engineering.
+ At least 2 years of experience in project engineering or project management (PMP certification considered an asset).
• Key Skills and Abilities:
+ Excellent problem-solving abilities, with willingness to apply technical solutions across multiple industries.
+ Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills, capable of delivering technical reports and presentations.
+ Self-motivated, proactive, and able to manage competing priorities and demands.
+ Strong organization skills and demonstrated attention to detail.
+ Ability to collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders.
• Additional Assets & Skills considered
+ Experience in designing small vessels, Category H fittings, and experimental piping systems for research purposes (e.g. ASME B31.3).
+ Knowledge of programming statistical analysis methods.
