Welcome Home to Canada Program
The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 continues its tradition of welcoming newcomers to Canada.
The Welcome Home to Canada (WHTC) program is a six month employability program for new immigrants to Canada. If you are an unemployed or underemployed immigrant and facing barriers to meaningful employment this program may be an option for you.
We currently have an opening for an Exhibitions Assistant as part of the 2025 Welcome Home to Canada program.
Job Title: Exhibitions Assistant
Duration: 6 months from October 2025 to March 2026
Wages: $17.75 per hour
Reports to: Curator, Temporary and Travelling Exhibitions
Hours: 37.5 hours a week with two (2) paid rest periods of 15 minutes and one 30 minute unpaid lunch break each day.
Program eligibility
You must be either a permanent resident of Canada, Canadian citizen born outside of Canada (this means you have immigrated to Canada and have become a Canadian citizen) or a protected person as defined in Section 95 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act who is legally entitled to work in Canada and Nova Scotia
AND
You are unemployed or underemployed and facing barriers to employment such as lack of previous Canadian work experience, foreign credentials, language barriers or lack of professional networks.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Curator with day-to-day supervision by the Assistant Curator, the Exhibitions Assistant is responsible for the coordination of booking, transport and installation of the Museum's small travelling exhibits as well as assisting in the installation, preparation and dismantling of other museum exhibitions.
As part of the Welcome Home to Canada employment program at the Museum, the Exhibitions Assistant will participate in career-developing opportunities such as English or French lessons and networking and museum sector training, as applicable.
Responsibilities
Exhibition Operations & Financial Management

  • Arranges loans of small travelling exhibits and acts as the Museum's main liaison with hosts of small exhibits, including communicating exhibit host requirements, preparing and processing contracts and invoices as well as supporting hosts during the exhibit's display
  • Coordinates shipping arrangements for small travelling exhibitions
  • Assists with updating exhibition communication channels (web, internal newsletter, information sheets)
  • Assists in conducting follow-up through exhibit host surveys/feedback program and maintains information tracking spreadsheets for small travelling exhibits
  • Handles inquiries from prospective and confirmed exhibit hosts and conducts follow-up
  • Administration duties for record keeping and bill paying of travelling exhibition expenses
  • Renewing and tracking image licenses for exhibitions
  • Maintains budget tracking document for exhibition department budget
  • Assists with onsite exhibition installation, preparation, dismantling and other exhibitions duties as required
  • Reports risk issues to the Curator
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Curator
Collections
  • Organizes and updates Collections data, metadata, digital media, and associated information
  • Photographing and handling artifacts, as required
Marketing, Communication and Development
  • Shares promotional materials with prospective hosts and supports confirmed exhibit host's promotion of the exhibit in accordance with the Museum's promotional guidelines
Skills required
  • Experience in administrative duties and/or project planning
  • Proficiency with information tools, including Microsoft suite
  • Ability to work independently in a fast paced, team-oriented environment

  • Strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Attention to detail and care
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • The ability to communicate effectively in English, oral and written
  • Museum or gallery experience an asset
  • French language skills an asset

Working Conditions & Physical Demands
  • Standing on feet when installing or moving exhibitions
  • Occasional lifting and moving of crates, cases and audio-visual equipment up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasional use of hand and power tools
  • Working in an office environment

This position is included within the Bargaining Unit under the Collective Agreement. As a condition of employment, the successful candidate for the position will be required to become a member of the Service Employees International Union Local 2, Brewery General and Professional Workers Union. All Employees covered by the Agreement shall pay Union dues as established by the Union.
