Welcome Home to Canada Program



The Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 continues its tradition of welcoming newcomers to Canada.

The Welcome Home to Canada (WHTC) program is a six month employability program for new immigrants to Canada. If you are an unemployed or underemployed immigrant and facing barriers to meaningful employment this program may be an option for you.

We currently have an opening for a Community Engagement Assistantas part of the 2025 Welcome Home to Canada program.

Job Title:

Community Engagement Assistant

Duration:

6 months from October 2025 to March 2026

Wages:

$17.75 per hour

Reports to:

Public Programs and Community Engagement Manager/Marketing and Brand Manager

Hours:

37.5 hours a week with two (2) paid rest periods of 15 minutes and one 30 minute unpaid lunch break each day. As the Museum operates 7 days a week, the workweek includes Saturdays and/or Sundays and irregular hours (evenings, weekends)

Program eligibility

You must be either a permanent resident of Canada, Canadian citizen born outside of Canada (this means you have immigrated to Canada and have become a Canadian citizen) or a protected person as defined in Section 95 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act who is legally entitled to work in Canada and Nova Scotia

AND

You are unemployed or underemployed and facing barriers to employment such as lack of previous Canadian work experience, foreign credentials, language barriers or lack of professional networks.

Position Summary

The purpose of this position is to assist the Public Programs and Community Engagement Manager and Coordinator in the administration, coordination and delivery of public programs and to assist the marketing and communications team with efforts to promote and drive visitation to the Museum.

Responsibilities

Supports logistics associated with public events, including A/V, Registration and ticketing and Assistance for special guests, performers, and speakers Supports administrative tasks associated with public events, including: Accounting forms, Marketing and communication forms, Web forms and Facility forms Supports development of new programs and events Supports public program marketing and communications efforts Assists the Marketing and Communications team with the development of evergreen social media content Helps compile and organize social media content libraries or templates that can be used long-term. Contributes creative social media content ideas that align with key themes, initiatives, and campaign strategies.

Skills Required

Comfortable interacting with a wide variety of people: community partners, Museum staff and the public Reliable, responsible Ability to follow instructions and work with minimal supervision Ability to perform repetitive tasks Excellent organizational skills Communicates well with the public, both in person and on the telephone Good command of the English language: spoken, comprehension, written High quality of customer service Interest in Canadian and world history Ability to communicate in French is a definite asset Familiarity with Meta platforms (Facebook, Instagram) Familiarity with tools and platforms used for creating and editing content such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, and similar software considered an asset Experience supporting social media content creation within a team environment considered an asset

This position is included within the Bargaining Unit under the Collective Agreement. As a condition of employment, the successful candidate for the position will be required to become a member of the Service Employees International Union Local 2, Brewery General and Professional Workers Union. All Employees covered by the Agreement shall pay Union dues as established by the Union.
