Event and Communications Specialist

Primary Purpose: Career Services empowers students to achieve career success by leading, guiding, and partnering to advance career education at the University of Saskatchewan. The primary purpose of this position is to support the development and administration of events, resources, and programming that align with Career Services’ strategic direction. The Event and Communications Specialist will work alongside the Career Services team to plan and coordinate virtual and in-person events including Careers Day, student engagement information sessions, industry panels, and Kick Start Your Career sessions. The Event and Communications Specialist will also work closely with the Teaching, Learning, and Student Experience (TLSE) Service Team to design, develop and implement a marketing and communications strategy to uphold Career Services’ brand and credibility and expand its reach and stakeholder engagement. Additionally, the incumbent will contribute to advancing career education institutionally, by working with the Career Services team to analyze the needs of employer and community partners, college and unit partners, and students and alumni; and developing, connecting, and contributing to projects and initiatives in these areas.

This position reports to the Manager, Career Services. This position has no direct reports.

Nature of Work: The work is complex, requiring creativity, close attention to detail and quality of work, and collaboration within Career Services, TLSE and across the institution. The ability to develop and manage projects in alignment with the unit and institutional goals and objectives is essential. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong work ethic, a positive attitude and a commitment to student career success. Some travel, evening and weekend work may be required.

Accountabilities: Event Planning and Coordination
  • Work alongside the Employer and Community Engagement Coordinators to plan and coordinate virtual and in-person employer relations events including Careers Day, discipline-specific career fairs, student engagement information sessions, and industry panels.
  • Work alongside the Experiential Learning Coordinators to plan and coordinate virtual and in-person experiential learning events including USask Connects sessions, Kick Start Your Career sessions, Faculty Experiential Learning Symposia, and Riipen information sessions.
  • Support other Career Services events, initiatives, programs, and outreach activities as needed.

Marketing and Communications
  • Collaborate with the TLSE Service Team to design and develop Career Services’ marketing and communications strategy.
  • Implement Career Services’ marketing and communications strategy with the support of the TLSE Service Team by:
  • Developing and managing the Career Services’ social media plan including the building of a social media schedule and distributing university branded content.
  • Creating, managing, and maintaining Career Services’ web content including Major Maps and CareerLink content.
  • Producing and distributing Career Services’ print and digital resources.
  • Developing and distributing messages to key audiences: employer and community partners, college and unit partners, and students and alumni.
  • Developing new initiatives (e.g., videos, social media channels, new resources) that align with the defined strategy and continue to enhance Career Services’ reach and impact.
  • Oversee CareerLink and Co-Curricular Records (CCR) content, operations and functionality.

General Administration
  • Collect, organize and analyze data to assist in meeting evaluation requirements, measuring outcomes, and assessing the success and impact of Career Services’ initiatives including events, and marketing and communication efforts.
  • Submit regular updates on metrics and contribute to reporting.
  • Contribute to developing and managing annual budgets to ensure cost-effective use of resources.
  • Assist with the day-to-day front-line service and support when necessary, including (but not limited to) approving CareerLink job postings and employer profiles, and responding to general inquiries.
  • Ensure work is completed within established deadlines by defining goals, aligning all required resources, effectively setting work priorities, and collaborating with others as needed.
  • Undertake personal and professional development activities to advance expertise in marketing and communications, employer relations, and career education to progress one’s skills both from a theoretical and applied perspective.
  • Support equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) within Career Services and advance and champions EDI in all programming.
  • Undertakes other activities, as may be delegated from time to time, in support of Career Services and TLSE goals and priorities.


Education: An undergraduate degree is required. Coursework or a major in marketing, communications or English would be considered an asset. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Experience: A minimum of three years of experience working in a fast-paced environment with multiple demands is required. Experience with event planning, website management and maintenance, social media management, and/or communications is preferred. Experience working in higher education is considered an asset.

  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and oral, with an ability to communicate in a compelling manner to effectively convey key messages to a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to structure, organize and build initiatives, and effectively plan and manage multiple projects with attention to detail. The ideal candidate will also possess the ability to be flexible and adaptable able to adjust to changing priorities and evolving contexts.
  • Ability to build and maintain collaborative and productive relationships, exercising professionalism, diplomacy, judgment, and tact, and to act confidentially and with cultural sensitivity.

  • Proficiency in contemporary computer applications and knowledge of social media and web platforms (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Office, LinkedIn, Survey Monkey, Cascade, and Canvas).
