From October to mid-April, the Roads Equipment Operator/Labourer will be responsible for operating various pieces of heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner. From mid-April to September, the Parks Equipment Operator/Labourer will primarily be responsible for operating light and heavy parks related equipment.Primary accountabilities include:Roads Equipment Operator/Labourer

  • Safely operate various pieces of heavy equipment which may include 1-7-ton axle trucks with winter attachments, loaders, graders, sweepers, skid steers, hand and power tools
  • Perform municipal roadway maintenance which includes but is not limited to road and sidewalk snow and ice control management, as it pertains to winter operations
  • Perform spring clean-up duties
  • Carry out requested maintenance as required
Parks Equipment Operator/Labourer
  • Safely and competently operate heavy equipment including loader backhoe, tractor, bobcat, rough mower, infield groomer, up to 3-ton trucks and other heavy equipment as assigned
  • Safely and competently operate light equipment including ride-on mowers, utility vehicles, sweepers, push mowers, snow blowers, rototillers and other turf maintenance equipment as assigned
  • Operate various pieces of equipment to mow, aerate, fertilize, top-dress and over-seed sports fields and other park areas
  • Work alongside equipment trainers to become the expert equipment operator for the department
  • Detect equipment servicing and maintenance issues and report them accordingly
  • Complete paperwork such as pre-trip vehicle/equipment inspections and complete work order information
  • Carry out park\'s repairs, maintenance and other duties as required
You Bring:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid Class 3 driver\'s licence is required
  • Current Standard First Aid Level C CPR and AED would be a definite asset (must be able to complete within 1 year)
  • Experience and a common knowledge in both roads and parks operations
  • Two (2) or more years\' experience in a parks related field including horticulture, arboriculture, pest management or construction/landscaping maintenance would be a definite asset
  • Experience operating larger rough/ditch mowers is a definite asset
  • Experience in asphalt works would be a definite asset
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and demonstrated ability to operate equipment safely and effectively in all conditions
  • Strong organizational and scheduling skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Proven customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision in a team environment
  • Enthusiastic and self-motivated, with a willingness to learn

The work in both positions is physically demanding and may involve some heavy lifting, prolonged bending, and kneeling.Roads Equipment Operator/Labourer:
  • This position requires various physically demanding tasks in all weather conditions and the ability to work a compressed work week, which includes nights and weekends during the winter season (7-day shifts, 5:30am to 5:30pm - 7 off - 7-night shifts, 5:30pm to 5:30am - 7 off)
  • The wage range is $29.50/hr. to $36.87/hr. dependent on roads experience and qualifications
  • Must be willing to perform physically demanding tasks in all weather conditions and work overtime as required
Parks Equipment Operator/Labourer:
  • This position will work a 40-hour work week
  • This position will require on-call availability. Work is done primarily outside under all weather conditions
  • The wage range is $29.50/hr. to $36.87/hr. dependent on parks experience and qualifications
