Environment and Climate Change Canada is looking for graduates or current students who are interested in gaining experience enforcing federal environmental (pollution) laws. The Environmental Enforcement Directorate (EED) needs motivated candidates to work as Enforcement Officers in planning and conducting inspections and investigations under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA 1999) and the Fisheries Act. Job Title: Environmental Enforcement Officer Key Activities:

  • Assisting Enforcement Officers with inspection activities (e.g. legal sampling, industrial site visits, spill response, compliance verification, etc.) under the CEPA 1999 and the Fisheries Act.
  • Assisting Enforcement Officers with investigation activities (e.g. statements, search warrants, court briefs, etc.) under CEPA 1999, and the Fisheries Act.
  • Assisting the regional Intelligence program and officers in gathering and analyzing information to identify suspected violations and assist in inspection targeting.
  • Various projects relating to environmental enforcement.
  • Testifying in court, if necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • You are enrolled or have recently graduated from a post-secondary school (includes college, technical college or university) related to the duties of the position (chemistry, biology, environmental sciences, law, natural resource law enforcement or criminology).
  • You have a desire to work in the environmental (pollution) law enforcement field.
  • You are willing to travel and work in remote locations on short notice.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Possess a valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license;
  • Possess a valid first aid certificate;
  • Willing to undergo a security clearance (prior to employment commencing).
Asset Criteria: You have knowledge of the following:
  • The roles and responsibilities of Environment Canada-EED;
  • An understanding of environmental issues relating to pollution;
  • Enforcement (inspection and investigative) procedures;
  • CEPA 1999, and the pollution prevention provisions of the Fisheries Act, specifically section 36(3).
You have experience and/or knowledge in the following:
  • Environmental sampling (water, air, soil, etc.)
  • Regulatory law enforcement
Locations of Positions: Calgary (AB), Edmonton (AB), Regina (SK), Winnipeg (MB), Yellowknife (NWT) Rate of Pay: Approx.$28.00/hour (37.5 hour work week - Monday to Friday) NOTE: Permanent Enforcement Officers in EED have the opportunity to develop over time to a GT-05 senior level (annual salary of $85,004 + $3,534 officer allowance) Starting Date: May 1, 2023 TBD (dependent on successful applicant\xe2\x80\x99s availability) Work Term: Various depending on applicant. Minimum 90 days (May-Sep) up to 1 year term with potential for extension.
