About the Job

Vendasta\'s Engineering Managers strive to improve the effectiveness of all of R&D, and its development teams. They focus on ensuring development/infrastructure standards and processes to create software products that are continually evaluated and refined. They are responsible for creating a high performing/high-velocity organization as Vendasta evolves and grows as a business.

As an Engineering Manager you will operate within a leadership and management role inside of our Research & Development department, tasked with building and maintaining high-performing engineering teams. An Engineering Manager is a frontline manager for the organization\'s engineers and can expect to have ideally 10 direct reports spread across 2 development teams. In addition to managing people, the EM is also expected to drive processes for their teams.

As an Engineering Manager you will work closely with the group of Engineering Managers where you will ensure that our software teams are following best practices, and are operating in a manner that complements divisional and company goals.

If the opportunity to be a leader in culture, recruitment, staff management, and career growth excites you, this is the opportunity for you!

The impact you\'ll have

Performance Management

  • In order to build a high-performing/high-impact development team it is imperative that performance is managed effectively. As an Engineering Manager you will need to understand the developers\' level of performance as it pertains to their role and ensure any deficiencies are managed. You will be providing timely performance feedback to your reports, setting expectations, and managing out when necessary.
Career Management
  • You will be positioned to facilitate the career growth of the engineers that report to you. You are tasked with building high-performing/high-impact teams and managing the growth of developers which plays an important role in strengthening the team. You will actively build individual growth plans in cooperation with the developers on your teams. These growth plans will be managed through regular check-ins where feedback is provided to keep progress moving forward. You will also facilitate promotions when warranted. Every developer should feel supported by you as their Engineering Manager regarding their career growth.
Process
  • Teams will have processes that are followed by all of R&D as well as team-specific processes. You will help drive the team to find processes that work for them while also identifying new processes that could help the team be more effective. All development teams at Vendasta use Scrum and you will be able to operate as a coach in this discipline. You will ensure your teams are following best practices that align with the framework and allow the teams to meet organizational objectives.
Hiring and Resourcing
  • Building high-performing teams involves hiring the right people and making sure teams are staffed properly to deliver on organizational priorities. Churn is a normal part of doing business so there will always be a need to recruit, identify, interview, and hire candidates. As an EM you will work with the larger Engineering Management group to keep a hiring pipeline moving and ready to bring in new people when necessary. In addition to this you will play a role to ensure teams are staffed with the right people for the job.
Team Impact
  • A development team\'s success is tied to the positive impact it has on the organization. All of the previously mentioned areas of focus for an EM play directly into a team\'s impact. An EM who effectively manages performance, career development, and processes is in a good position to ensure their teams are having a high impact. Because they are striving to have high-impact teams, holding them accountable for what they own is imperative. As an Engineering Manager you will understand and measure what metrics will be useful in demonstrating your teams\' impact and be comfortable managing upward to senior leadership.
While Software Development is not a primary responsibility of this role, there is an expectation effort will be made to stay informed on our technologies. An ability to make contributions will be an asset. Performance of an Engineering Manager will be measured in the output (value delivered) from their teams.

The value you\'ll bring
  • 3+ years experience managing agile software teams, ideally managing between 6 and 10 developers across multiple teams
  • 5+ years experience as a software developer
  • Bachelor\'s degree in software engineering or computer science considered an asset
  • Experience or strong understanding with high scalability, data-intensive, distributed Internet applications
  • Ability to generate support for a company/team decision to help drive objectives
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present complex technical information clearly and concisely to a variety of audiences
  • Bias for action, while dealing well with ambiguity
