General Accountability



Provides expertise in relation to engineering work associated with the design, operations, maintenance and rehabilitation of TTC\'s structures and/or facilities. Provides engineering support and accordance to relevant TTC staff. Takes professional responsibility for engineering work as required by the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO).

Key Job Functions


  • Plan, schedule and produce detailed engineering design, specifications and drawings for tunnelling, embankments, soil/groundwater remediation/management, pavement, shoring, foundations, and other geotechnical structures.
  • Coordinate with, direct and/or guide relevant TTC staff, consultants, contractors, etc., including on-site supervision of geotechnical and geoenvironmental consultants.
  • Perform a variety of complex calculations to produce complete engineering designs and specifications.
  • Investigate, evaluate, and test new, existing or proposed design; troubleshoot problems; recommend alternate design and related matters.
  • Provide design/development review expertise on submissions received at various stages of design and provide comments concerning compliance with TTC requirements.
  • Perform feasibility studies and surveys and assess existing conditions by conducting geotechnical /geoenvironmental inspections at construction sites.
  • Participate in the development of Design Standards.

Education and Experience


  • Must be licensed as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario, supported by a University Degree or College Diploma in Environmental, Civil or Geological Engineering, or the equivalent, combined with several years of related experience in a geotechnical or geoenvironmental environment in Toronto or in a location with subsurface soils and geology similar to the GTA.


Additional Requirements


  • Compile site plans and utility drawings, and arrange for access to investigation sites by consultants, including coordinating the approvals of outside agencies where required.
  • Review geotechnical/geoenvironmental reports.
  • Sound knowledge of site investigation practices for transit and related facilities.
  • Familiarity with the general geological environment in which the TTC structures are built.
  • Sound knowledge of relevant legislation including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Environmental Protection Act, and other relevant Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks policies and regulations.
  • Sound experience with Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments, and excess soil management monitoring/tracking during construction. Familiar with the proposed Excess Soil Management Regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to instruct and supervise others.
  • Fully conversant with MS Office applications; ability to use MicroStation/J software is an asset.
  • A valid Province of Ontario Class G Driver\'s license, and use of own vehicle.
  • Experience in indoor air quality monitoring, dust monitoring, and environmental risk assessment is a definite asset.
