Job Description


JOB SUMMARY The purpose of this position is to provide support for the development of preliminary, conceptual and detailed design in Geotechnical and Environmental Engineering, as well as Subject Matter Expert (SME) support for Geotechnical and Environmental design work, that may present itself during the execution of Facility Decommissioning or Environmental Remediation projects at CNL. Under the direction of the Engineering Manager, the Civil Engineer will:

  • Provide the necessary Geotechnical/Environmental Engineering Expert advice and recommendations to the Engineering manager for decision and guidance
  • Evaluate existing Geotechnical/Environmental design to accommodate safe and efficient demolition of infrastructure.
  • Contribute to the development of conceptual, preliminary and detailed design of geotechnical/environmental engineering work and related infrastructure.
  • Prepare design documents, design requirements, design descriptions, technical specifications, tendering documents, standards, procedures and analyses reports.
  • Review and/or recommend technical specification for Geotechnical/Environmental Engineering equipment, tests, and processes/procedures
  • Provide engineering support during the decommissioning and demolition phases of projects.
  • Provide subject matter expert review and acceptance of removal or demolition designs prepared by outside agencies.
  • Supervise technical staff and/or Junior Staff.
  • Liaise with external contractors
  • Develop engineering specifications and standards facilitating a consistent design approach.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor (Honours) degree in Civil Engineering or related Engineering discipline from a recognized university of recognized standing; or membership in an engineering or scientific professional organization authorized by statute to establish qualification for membership in that organization.
  • Sound knowledge of geotechnical and environmental engineering and more than ten (10) years of significant related experience in the areas of:
  • Design of shallow and deep foundations.
  • Earthworks including design and execution of large scale deep excavations.
  • Conceptual and detail design/requirements of sloping and soil stabilization
  • Conceptual and design/requirements of lateral earth pressure structures (e.g. sheet piles, gravity and cantilever walls)
  • Conceptual and detail design for erosion control.
  • Water management during large scale remediation.
  • Requirements for use of equipment and machinery in soil treatment (e.g. Hydro-vac)
  • Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA) – mostly for dealing with the production and management of generated waste, hazardous waste, fumes/dust/sediment, etc.;
  • Landfill design and construction; and
  • Road design and construction.
  • Compaction, soil properties, fill and backfill works.
  • Familiar with the Guidelines issued by Professional Engineers of Ontario titled “Professional Engineers Providing Services for Demolition of Buildings and other Structures”, and the Engineering Dismantling and Demolition Work Plan (EDDWP) described therein;
  • Sound knowledge of the National Building Code and National Fire Code and other relevant codes and standards used in the design, construction, and commissioning of nuclear and non-nuclear facilities
  • Supervisory and project management experience.
  • Knowledge of Design Engineering practices, organization and quality assurance processes, Engineering Change Control and Configuration Management.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in technical matters, to routinely solve technical problems and to make independent decisions.
  • Demonstrated performance in providing engineering oversight to various sizes of jobs.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills; previous experience making technical presentations to small and large audiences.
  • Excellent knowledge of CNL's engineering practices, organization and quality management program.
  • Experienced in the technical procurement process, including supplier qualification reviews, bid evaluations, review and acceptance of technical deliverables; and monitoring contractor performance vs. technical specifications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CSA N286/N285 quality standards.
  • Knowledge of radiation protection (RP) standards and CRL RP practices.
  • Demonstrated effective team leadership and team-building skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and interact with staff at various levels of the organization.
