JOB TITLE: Electronic Maintenance Technician - Trainee
LOCATION: Various Northern Sites across the Arctic
TYPE: Unionized, Rotational Position (6 weeks on, 6 weeks off)
This position is part of Nasittuq's Inuit Training and Development Program (ITDP), an 18-month program reserved for beneficiaries of the Nunavut, Nunatsiavut or Inuvialuit land claim groups, in line with our commitments under the North Warning System contract.
The ITDP is a structured program that combines on-the-job training with formal education and certification, as required for the role, designed to build skills and prepare incumbents for permanent employment opportunities.
The duties below represent the scope of responsibilities for the permanent Electronic Maintenance Technician (EMT) role that the incumbent will be trained to perform within the 18-month period.

Nasittuq Corporation (from the Inuktitut word meaning "looking out from the highest point") operates and maintains the North Warning System (NWS), a critical joint Canada-US radar network with 47 sites across Northern Canada.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:
As an Electronics Maintenance Technician, you'll play a key role in keeping critical radar and communications systems operational at North Warning System sites across the Arctic. You'll be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and installing advanced electronics and communications equipment that supports Canada's northern defense infrastructure.

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on electronic systems, including:
  • Radar and satellite communication systems
  • RF and data/voice communications equipment
  • Router-based IP networks and multiplexers
  • Automated Weather Observation Systems (AWOS)
  • Troubleshoot and analyze equipment failures, recommend and implement solutions.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation through the work management system.
  • Support the installation and commissioning of new equipment, ensuring all work meets quality and safety standards.
  • Respond to emergency system failures and provide timely repairs.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, logistics staff, and the North Warning System Command Centre for coordination and approvals.
  • Ensure all work is completed safely and in accordance with environmental and security requirements.
WHO YOU ARE:
EDUCATION:
  • High School diploma (or equivalent)
CERTIFICATE(S) / LICENSE(S): Certificates/Licenses: Electronics Technician Diploma from a recognized institution or Canadian military equivalent.
Valid driver's license (required)
  • Beneficiary status under the Nunavut, Nunatsiavut or Inuvialuit land claim groups (required)
  • Possession Acquisition License (PAL) (asset)
EXPERIENCE:
  • Previous trade or technical experience, ideally in northern/remote environments
  • Previous experience with the NWS contract (asset)
KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Strong organizational, communications, computer, problem solving skills
  • Adaptability and ability to manage multiple priorities and work cross-culturally
  • Ability to speak Inuktitut (asset)
COMPETENCIES / SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Strong understanding of telecommunications, RF, radar, satellite, and networking systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and manuals.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and in remote environments.
  • availability and willingness to maintain positive standing at all times in the training program

ROTATION & OVERTIME: 6 weeks in/6 weeks out rotation (48-hour workweeks) with overtime at 1.5x your base rate. Paid travel days (up to 2 days) with all travel costs covered.

NORTHERN LIVING ALLOWANCE: Additional biweekly allowance for employees residing in designated northern communities: Inuvik, Cambridge Bay, Sanirajak, and Iqaluit.
Land Claim Beneficiaries of the Nunavut, Inuvialuit, and Nunatsiavut Land Claim Agreements will be prioritized. Applicants are encouraged to self-identify.
