The Opportunity

We are looking for an Electrical Technician to join our team. Reporting to the Supervisor, Substation Operations, you will join a team of professionals at our Coldbrook location.

Key elements of this role include:

As a member of the Substation Operations team, you will direct and perform all aspects of installation, commissioning, maintenance and repair of electrical/electronic plant on the Transmission/Distribution System (e.g. reclosers, breakers, transformers, controls, protective relays, telecommunication, thermal and hydro equipment). You may be required to travel throughout the province for work related to maintenance, reliability, and customer restoration.

You may be temporarily assigned to other locations to assist other areas when required and will be expected to travel throughout the province.

You will be required to participate in regulatory training and be willing to participate in on-the-job training or training programs that support the development of additional skills.

You will be responsible for personal safety and that of co-workers by observing and ensuring compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations. You will be accountable for environmental performance as it relates to the environmental management system processes and initiatives.

This position is considered a safety sensitive position. As such, the successful candidate must comply with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Policy which requires a confidential pre-employment alcohol and drug test in accordance with the Emera Alcohol and Drug Procedure.

Your primary residence must be located within 30 minutes of headquarters and you will be available for after hour emergency service restoration including rotational standby duty.

You recognize yourself in most of the following competencies, and where possible possess the skills and experience listed below:

  • You must have a Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology (Power Discipline) with eligibility for membership with TechNova.
  • You must have two years\' experience maintaining electrical equipment related to transmission and distribution.
  • You must have proven problem resolution skills and the flexibility and ability to adapt to rescheduled assignments.
  • You must be proficient with troubleshooting electrical/electronic equipment and software use and programming in an industrial setting.
  • You must be a strong team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, have a strong computer aptitude and the ability to deal with multiple tasks and demands.
  • Previous utility experience with Transmission Substation Equipment is an asset.
  • You must hold a valid Nova Scotia Driver\'s License with a minimum of two years driving experience and provide a driver\'s abstract satisfactory to NSPI.
If no qualified candidates apply, consideration will be given to candidates who are willing to complete an apprenticeship program within Nova Scotia Power.

Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities
  • Must be able to lift 37 lbs. from the floor to shoulder level on an occasional basis and 10 lbs. above shoulder level.
  • Able to carry 37 lbs. with both hands on an occasional basis, with the overall ability to carry 30 lbs.
  • Able to push and pull with upper and whole-body strength on an occasional basis up to 50 lbs.
  • Perform static reaching at waist to shoulder level frequently and from below waist level to overhead on an occasional basis.
  • Perform frequent standing and sitting.
  • Perform occasional bending, stooping, walking and neck flexion, extension, and rotation movements.
  • Perform squatting, kneeling, crouching, and climbing on a minimal basis.
  • Ability to perform fine finger manipulation and have a simple to firm grasp while performing turning and pinching motions.
