Career Opportunity Kids Cancer Care is looking for an Education Support Specialist (ESS) to work from the Calgary office for 0.6 FTE (22.5 hours per week). This position will be a part of the Education Support team and primarily support the Tutoring Program. This is a permanent part-time position reporting to the Director of Outreach. Kids Cancer Care offers a competitive salary and benefits package. Position Overview The Education Support Specialist is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of the Tutoring Program and supports the work of all Education Support programs. Childhood cancers survivors can face complex, long-term side effects which may impact their ability to learn. The Education Support Program aims to support children and their families disadvantaged by cancer. This position works collaboratively with the Education Support team and the Outreach team to support families and volunteers through various program channels. Key Areas of Responsibility The Education Support Specialist will be responsible for the following areas: Committee Coordination

  • Assist with facilitating and reporting (about the tutoring program) at meetings of the Education Support Advisory Committee. Engage the expertise of committee members to support education programs.
  • Provide ongoing stewardship to current committee members and coordinate member recruitment as needed.
Tutoring Program In collaboration with the Education Support team: Key Roles:
  • Support the intake of new families to the program.
  • Consult with family to review and interpret educational records to determine each learner\xe2\x80\x99s unique needs and choose the best possible tutor match to meet their needs.
  • For each learner, generate a concise Learner Profile and design a detailed Learning Plan for tutor use that includes personalized, targeted strategies and specific resources.
  • Compile individualized learning supplies (Learning Kits) for tutor, learner and family use.
  • Educate, mentor and provide ongoing support and supervision of volunteer tutors and coaches (e.g., meetings, emails, phone calls).
  • Monitor K-6 learner progress (e.g., review tutor Session Summaries, check-in with tutors, parents, coaches)
  • Deliver one-to-one support to parents as needed.
  • Provide or connect to educational resources and/or partner with a volunteer coach.
  • Consider the wellbeing and safety of all participants (offer compassionate response, adhere to Kids Cancer Care policies, implement risk management processes, etc.)
  • Collaborate with staff regarding Kids Cancer Care families, programs and related matters
Assisting Roles:
  • Support aspects of recruitment, interviewing, matching and recognition of volunteer tutors and coaches.
  • Assist in the development of a volunteer coaching strategy to further support families and tutors.
  • Regularly review current evidence-based educational research and pediatric oncology information to broaden knowledge base and compile or generate high-quality learning resources for family, tutor or coach use.
  • Co-facilitate tutor, family and coach workshops or meetings and contribute meaningful content.
  • Assist the Education Support team in evaluating the impact of the tutoring program (via learner/parent/tutor/coach feedback, surveys, etc.).
  • Engage the expertise of the Education Support Advisory Committee, Kids Cancer Care staff and coaches to guide and evaluate the tutoring program.
  • Review and analyze program outcomes and evaluation data to best adapt the tutoring program.
  • Alongside the Education Support team, create and deliver updated info sessions about the tutoring program to staff and Board, the Education Support Advisory Committee and community agencies to build partnerships (e.g., Alberta Children\xe2\x80\x99s Hospital, universities, etc.)
General Duties
  • Be aware of the needs of young people affected by childhood cancer and their families, especially related to short- and long-term effects, impacts on learning and education, and impacts on family wellbeing.
  • Ensure policies and guidelines of Kids Cancer Care are adhered to across all programs.
  • Represent Kids Cancer Care in the public and when speaking to volunteers, families, donors, and other stakeholders.
  • Establish and maintain working relationships with other educational professionals, Calgary and area schools, professionals at Alberta Children\xe2\x80\x99s Hospital and related community agencies.
  • Work flexible hours, with potential evening and weekend work.
  • Maintain confidential documentation of Kids Cancer Care children and families.
  • Assist with collecting and tracking program data, and monitoring program outcomes.
  • Attend courses, seminars, and workshops on topics related to the Education Support Program
  • Have a big heart.
Education and Certifications
  • Degree in Education, specializing in primary programs (Kindergarten to Grade 6) or equivalent experience in teaching primary ages.
  • Minimum of five years, full-time, work experience in a pre-school to grade six educational setting.
  • Basic Microsoft Office knowledge (Outlook, Sharepoint, Word, Excel, Office Teams).
  • Certificate or training in trauma-informed care is an asset.
Industry Knowledge
  • Must have experience working with children with specialized health or learning needs.
  • Teaching and/or tutoring experience.
  • Strong knowledge around early childhood numeracy and literacy.
  • Must have experience working with and supporting parents in stressful circumstances.
  • A growing knowledge of childhood cancer.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Mature and well-organized individual who can lead various teams of adults.
  • Demonstrated ability with computers and relevant software programs.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as required.
  • Experience working with families of children affected by cancer, trauma or other life- threatening illnesses/disorders.
Other Requirements
  • Must provide a current Level II Criminal Records Check, which includes vulnerable sector.
  • Valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license and access to a reliable personal vehicle that can be used for work, when Kids Cancer Care vehicle is unavailable (reimbursement for mileage provided.)
