Overview

Term: 1 year

The Eddy Covariance Data Technician position is responsible for uploading existing peatland eddy covariance datasets into AmeriFlux. This work is an important part of Can-Peat: The potential of Canada\xe2\x80\x99s peatlands as nature-based climate solutions (ECCC-CAAF 2022-2027) commitment to improving peatland data accessibility in Canada.

The Eddy Covariance Data Technician will work with peatland researchers and their technicians across Canada on preparing and submitting their existing datasets in AmeriFlux. The Technician will also assist researchers and students in further refining key datasets to be used in other Can-Peat research activities.

Responsibilities

Data selection and prioritization

  • Work with researchers and students in prioritizing data sets for processing
  • Ensure chosen data sets can be processed within the project timelines and are suitable for analysis
Preparing and formatting half-hour datasets
  • Conduct data quality control and cleaning such as the removal of data points with bad data
  • Gap-fill data as appropriate according to researchers\xe2\x80\x99 methods
  • Ensure datasets use standardized data variable names and units
  • Format files and content to be uploaded as an ASCII text file according to AmeriFlux\xe2\x80\x99s requirements
AmeriFlux Data Processing Pipeline
  • Follow the automated format and data QA/QCs in AmeriFlux and correct any issues
  • Work through AmeriFlux to submit data into the ONEFlux processing queue
Qualifications
  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s or master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in Biogeochemistry, Earth System Science, Environmental Science, Ecology, or a related field, or equivalent experience
Prior experience in programming and environmental data science * Prior experience processing, and synthesizing eddy-covariance flux data a plus

Competence with scientific computer software and basic data analysis, experience with Matlab and R statistical language a plus * Aptitude for research, strong analytical and oral and written scientific communication skills
  • Knowledge of peatland carbon cycling and/or climate change research a plus
