Duties

Under the supervision of the resource conservation manager, the candidate will develop new measures of ecological integrity to monitor the state of the park using remote sensing and will monitor those already in place. The candidate will also be responsible for managing research permit applications and ensuring that all internal requests related to geomatics are met. The candidate will supervise a team of two people who will support him in achieving the objectives.

The Parks Canada team working at the National Park Reserve of the Archipelago Mingan includes 20 employees nearly 50 people in the summer. The fieldwork, exclusively on islands, requires travel which is provided by Parks Canada boat operators. Departures are from the marina of Havre-Saint-Pierre or Mingan.

Intent of the process

EDUCATION:

Graduation from an accredited university with an undergraduate degree in resource management, conservation or other environmental science related to the duties of the position (environmental science includes biology, ecology, soil science and geography).

Degree equivalency
EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in study design, execution, analysis, and writing of complex technical/scientific reports in at least three of the following areas: ecosystem monitoring, active management, restoration, species at risk recovery, or environmental impact assessment;
  • Experience collecting, organizing, summarizing and analyzing scientific information from a variety of sources;
  • Experience supervising staff.

  • Knowledge of current practices and techniques for ecosystem and species conservation;

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in remote sensing data acquisition and processing.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willingness and ability to wear a Parks Canada uniform and prescribed protective equipment;
  • Willingness and ability to work and/or travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation;
  • Willingness and ability to work irregular hours, overtime, weekends and/or statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays, when required;
  • Willingness to obtain the required certification and willingness to operate field vehicles (e.g. all-terrain vehicles) and motorized and non-motorized vessels;
  • Hold or be able to obtain a Remote First Aid Certificate appropriate to the marine work environment.
  • Be able to travel to the work site by own means.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance
  • Possess a valid class 5 driver's licence;
  • The applicant may be required to complete a personal health statement in accordance with the Isolated Posts Policy ;
  • The candidate may be required to undergo and pass a pre-employment medical examination and regular medical examinations.
