The Ministry of Finance is looking for highly engaged individuals who would like to mobilize their research and analytical skills to provide expert quantitative advice on tax policy and help shape the evolution of Ontario's tax system.

The Personal Tax Policy and Design Branch provides advice and assistance to the Minister of Finance and to the Government of Ontario in formulating tax and benefits policy. The branch undertakes robust quantitative analysis using advanced modelling tools. It also ensures that tax legislation and regulations effectively express the province's tax and benefit policies.

What can I expect to do in this role?

As a member of the team, you will:

  • Develop and conduct research projects to support the policy development process
  • Design, develop, and use data and quantitative computer models to assess the impacts of tax policy options
  • Provide quantitative analysis to inform the development of policy options and prepare reports on findings
  • Brief your Manager, Director and Assistant Deputy Minister on specific policy issues, and provide technical support at various meetings


How do I qualify?

Research, Analytical and Quantitative Skills:

  • You have demonstrated knowledge of research methodologies and quantitative analysis
  • You are able to gather, evaluate, and analyze relevant data to support policy analysis and development
  • You have experience analyzing and interpreting data, conducting research projects, drawing conclusions, developing options and making recommendations


Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

  • You are able to prepare clear and concise reports and analysis for senior management, and communicate effectively in a professional setting
  • You can prepare succinct briefing documents and present complex ideas to senior management and colleagues in a simple and objective manner
  • You can develop and foster strong working relationships with clients and stakeholders and work on various projects and teams with a focus on solving complex problems


Economic and Technical Knowledge:

  • You have knowledge of economic theory and principles related to tax policy and the policy development process
  • You are proficient in a range of quantitative modelling software and tools, such as spreadsheets, databases, and programming languages
