Position Summary:
The
Driver Trainer & Safety Manager
is a key leadership role responsible for ensuring the highest standards of driver performance, safety compliance, and operational efficiency across the company's Canadian and U.S. operations. This position plays a dual role: providing hands-on driver training through the DCP Driver Certification Program and managing all aspects of transportation safety. The successful candidate will be a strong communicator and mentor who can develop drivers' skills, enforce safety policies, and cultivate a culture of accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities:
Driver Training & Development
Design, coordinate, and deliver comprehensive driver training sessions, including onboarding for new hires and refresher courses for existing drivers.
Deliver training through the DCP Driver Certification Program
, ensuring all drivers meet company and regulatory standards for skill, safety, and service quality.
Conduct one-on-one and group training in defensive driving, cargo securement, route planning, U.S./Canada cross-border compliance (i.e. PIP, CTPAT), specialized white-glove handling, and customer service best practices.
Evaluate driver performance through road tests, ride-alongs, and skills assessments, providing actionable feedback and coaching for improvement.
Maintain accurate training records and certification documentation for all drivers.
Safety Management
Develop, implement, and manage the company's transportation safety program in
compliance with Canadian and U.S. regulations
, including Ministry of Transportation (MTO), Department of Transportation (DOT), and FMCSA standards.
Monitor driver logs, hours of service, vehicle inspections, and electronic logging device (ELD) data to ensure regulatory compliance.
Conduct regular safety audits, accident investigations, and root cause analyses; recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Oversee incident reporting, claims management, and follow-up processes to ensure timely resolution and continuous safety improvement.
Coordinate with fleet maintenance to identify and address mechanical issues that may impact safety.
Leadership & Culture
Foster a positive safety-first culture
by promoting open communication, accountability, and adherence to company policies.
Serve as the primary contact for safety-related inquiries, inspections, and audits by government agencies and customers.
Lead safety meetings, toolbox talks, and driver recognition programs to reinforce best practices and reward exemplary performance.
Collaborate with operations, dispatch, and management teams to integrate safety initiatives into daily business activities.
Qualifications:
Minimum of
5 years of commercial driving experience
(Canada/USA cross-border experience preferred), with at least 3 years in a driver training, safety management, or supervisory role.
Valid Class AZ commercial driver's license
with a clean driving record.
MUST BE approved by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) as a
"Signing Authority"
under the Driver Certification Program (DCP).
In-depth knowledge of Canadian and U.S. transportation regulations, including DOT, FMCSA, and MTO requirements.
Well organized with proven ability to deliver engaging, effective driver training programs and evaluate driver competencies.
Strong leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills.
Proficiency in using electronic logging devices (ELDs), telematics systems, and Microsoft Office Suite.
Certification in transportation safety or driver training.
Experience with
white-glove, high-value, or specialized freight
handling is considered a strong asset.
Working Conditions:
Combination of
office and field work
, including in warehouse training, on-road training and evaluations.
Occasional travel within Canada and the United States for training, audits, and safety inspections.
Flexible schedule, including minimal evenings or weekends as required to support operational needs.
