Both individuals live fairly independently (cooking, cleaning for themselves, etc.) but require harm reduction supports throughout the day to support them with social, emotional and perhaps vocational goals.ALLERGY ALERT - Clients live in community-based home with petsThe PositionAs a Disability Support Worker (DSW), you will work to support the persons-served with building and maintaining healthy relationships and personal boundaries, setting and working towards achieving goals and enjoying life free from drug abuse within a safe home environment.If escalated there is a potential for verbal aggression or threats.In Your Role You Will

  • Help the individuals dream about possibilities, plan and achieve.
  • Mentor and teach life skills including communication skills, coping with emotions and change, budgeting, household management, sexual health, boundaries and self care, relationships, self expression, social skills, coping tools, community awareness, personal safety, etc.
  • Encourage opportunities for building healthy friendships with peers.
  • Promote inclusion in community activities involving artistic, educational, recreational programming and participation in the volunteer sector.
  • Link the client to community support services
  • Assist individual with daily living skills - such as preparing meals, household chores.
  • Drive persons-served (in your own vehicle) and supervise/participate with the client in recreational, leisure, vocational (training/employment) activities in the community.
  • Assist individual with behavioural, emotional and social needs/skills
  • Administer medication, first aid if/when necessary.
  • Liaise, on behalf of the persons-in-service, with the community, family members, guardians and employers.
  • Communicate/document information that relates to program changes/service recipient changes
  • Observe/document physical, developmental and psychological needs of individuals in service.
*** Prior to confirmation of employment all applicants must provide a current (dated within 6 months of hiring date) Criminal Record Check and Ministry Check. These checks can take up to 6 weeks to obtain, please ensure you prepare accordingly.As An Ideal Candidate You Possess
  • Previous experience providing specialized supports such as FASD, drug and alcohol addictions, intergenerational trauma, mental health, suicide and other behavioural issues.
  • A positive role model; calm, confident, patient, self motivated and motivates others
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, who can set & maintain healthy boundaries.
  • Valid class 5 driver license, suitable driving abstract and reliable vehicle
  • High School or GED Diploma
ALSO helpful, but will train if needed:
  • First Aid/CPR Certification
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention, Medication Administration, Abuse Protocol, Proactive Procedures and Behavioural Strategies, Foundations and Disabilities Training
  • Knowledge of basic health and safety rules and guidelines for personal health and safety, as appropriate.
