The Program




Taproot Community Support Services (formerly WJS Canada) works to improve the lives of persons in their communities through a variety of programs and services.



Taproot in Port Alberni provides individualized 24-hour support for children/youth and adults with a variety of specialized and/or complex needs.

Our Services include:

Supporting youth in recovering from adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and overcoming other adversity by providing them trauma informed care within resource homes. Community-based supports for adults with diverse abilities. Home-based supports for adults with diverse abilities. Home Share programs for adults with diverse abilities. Life skills development supports for both youth transitioning to adult services as well as adults with diverse abilities. Outreach supports for youth and adults that are supported with life skills, self-help skills, employment, and more.

In Your Role You Will



Assist Person served with the activities of daily living involving their personal and health care, behavioural, nutritional, recreational, social, vocational, educational, cultural and environmental needs as identified in their person-centered plans (PCP) while keeping trauma informed care at the forefront of support. Work in collaboration with MCFD, CLBC, VIHA, Mental Health Services, Community Supports, Outreach Teams, Harm Reduction Workers, Cultural Supports, Knowledge Keepers, Schools, Behavior Consultants, stakeholders and partners. Demonstrate a high degree of tolerance and respect for a supported individual's unique personality and challenges, while promoting one's dignity and rights Support and promote a friendly and effective working relationship with support individual, family and team members. Apply crisis intervention and risk management strategies. Assist with case management documentation by identifying strengths and potential challenges; contribute to the evaluation of the individual's progress and prepares reports. Organize household tasks (meal planning, food purchasing and preparation, house cleaning, basic maintenance) Implement individuals' daily schedule, including transporting individuals to and from appointments, school, monitoring progress and supporting at-home learning Administer medications as per policy Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as required Request a job description for full duties and responsibilities.

The Position




We are currently hiring for the following roles, in a casual / on-call capacity, with the opportunity to apply for part-time and full-time positions, as they become available:




Live-In Workers - $630.00-$740.00 per day


Employees must be available to work a variety of roles and shifts such as weekdays, weekends with the following shifts:

Live-In Support shifts, 24hours, 0800-0800


Once hired, Casual/On Call employees are contacted to work a variety of shifts (based on availability) to cover staff illness, LOA, vacation etc. located in Port Alberni, BC.



Live-in Support Workers receive free room and board during scheduled work shifts and may receive breaks from the resource home, as conditions permit.

Mandatory Pre-Employment Screenings and Checks



Prior to confirmation of employment, all applicants must provide a copy of a current Criminal Record Check and/or Government Screening Letter. These checks vary depending on province and sector and will be communicated by the Program Hiring Team.

As An Ideal Candidate You Possess



Experience working with youth or adults with complex behaviors Diploma or Degree in Social Work, Child and Youth Work, Human Services, Education, Sociology or Psychology An equivalent combination of education, training and experience, may also be considered. Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License with clean driver's abstract Reliable, safe vehicle with appropriate insurance for transporting individuals Experience with trauma informed practices Strong conflict resolution, mediation and crisis prevention and intervention techniques. Current WCB Occupational First Aid, Level 1 and CPR certificates required. Non-Violent Physical Crisis Intervention Certificate and/or MANDT are considered an asset.


Child & Youth Programs - successful applicants will be required to participate in MCFD screening and provide three (3) professional references prior to confirmed employment with Taproot Community Support Services
