Director Applied Research Labs

Summary

ServiceNow is a pioneer in innovation for enterprise software. ServiceNow Research is an expression of this desire for innovation in the field of AI. The Director of Applied Research Labs leads the AI Research transfer function and is managing the two ServiceNow Research applied labs: The Emerging technologies lab and the AI trust and governance Lab

The Emerging Technologies Lab (ETL):

• Acquires new technologies,
• Promotes those innovations by packaging them in demos,
• Builds prototypes targeting specific applications to validate that the technology is ready for transfer.

To support the efforts by the researchers to push on the edges of our understanding of AI, the ETL weaves bold ideas into tangible reality!

The AI Trust and Governance Lab is to be the trusted advisor for ServiceNow on Trust & Governance by guiding the company and its customers in their AI Strategy and Deployment through the following mechanisms

• Developing Risk Management and AI/Data Governance Frameworks
• Conducting Applied Research on technologies that enable Trustworthy AI, and disseminating these technologies to ServiceNow products through Proofs of Concepts and Tech Transfer Initiatives.
• Engaging with our stakeholders within and outside of ServiceNow to communicate our efforts and outcomes

Reporting to the Sr Director of research and scientific programs, the director of the Applied research lab will be part of the research leadership team tasked to develop and drive the strategy to futureproof AI-powered experiences for all users of the Now Platform, make workflows smarter and AI workloads more efficient and committed to making socially responsible contributions to the AI community.

Responsibilities

• Direct and oversee the business of the lab's portfolio through effective leadership and management.
• Ensure growth, motivation and well being of the team.
• Lead the development of labs strategic plans, goals, and objectives, and contribute to those of ServiceNow Research, ensuring alignment with the company.
• Ensure strong and open communications channels between all team members and across the organization,
• Oversee the recruitment, hiring, training and orientation team members
• With the Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer, set the strategic direction for the applied research work at Prosperity Now and ensure that it advances the mission of the organization
• Oversee execution of applied research strategy, ensuring the integrity and quality of research is maintained
• Nurture a culture of curiosity, problem solving, and invention focused on our product and platform roadmap.
• Expand the team's work by connecting it to broader efforts in the field and other emerging opportunities
• Establish and maintain strategic relationships with ServiceNow internal stakeholders to identify opportunities for collaboration, growing the team's capabilities and impact on the product and platform roadmap
• Directly supervises the Lab managers or supervisors.

Qualifications

Qualifications

• A MSc with 8 years of experience (preferably in industry) or a PhD in a relevant field with 4 years of appropriate experience.
• Capacity to drive a vision of governance and trustworthy AI in industrial R&D context
• Experience in managing cross-functional teams
• Passion for and past work in trustworthiness and governance-related topics.
• Experience working with AI/ML models and techniques
• Ability to manage projects portfolio with self-directed initiatives, including budget and to direct an applied research team.
• Familiarity with doing a literature review, evaluating, and implementing (sometimes from scratch) the best solution found.
• Capacity to deal well with ambiguity, prioritizing needs, and delivering results in a dynamic environment.
• Ability to communicate research findings to a non-research audience.
• A "getting things done" mindset.
