Purpose

The Director, Mortgage Operations and Excellence Initiatives will be responsible for providing the strategic leadership to the Mortgage Prefund and Funding teams, while simultaneously driving operational excellence throughout the department. This includes finding opportunities to eliminate, digitize or move processes and procedures to improve efficiency. The Director will provide strong leadership and motivate individual and team performance, fostering the creation of a vibrant, energetic, and customer-centric work environment. The team size is 130 people.

Accountabilities

Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and
leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.

Responsible for providing the strategic and tactical leadership to Mortgage Prefund & Funding by:

  • Ensuring the funding team is processing activities in a timely manner, efficiently, and in accordance with the Bank\'s risk appetite.
  • Ensuring mortgage prefund team is accurately and efficiently reviewing files and establishing synergies between branch and non-branch teams.
  • Manage escalations as needed across both funding and prefund teams.
  • Forecasting, coordinating, and monitoring staffing levels to business volumes and establish benchmarks for appropriate tracking and trending to monitor accuracy, compliance, and efficiency.
  • Executive reporting through communications, packages and dashboards to highlight the successes of the teams.
Drive operational excellence throughout Mortgage Prefund, Funding, and Home Financing Solutions Underwriting by:
  • Assessing business processes and simplifying and eliminating processes that could add increased business value.
  • Driving technology initiatives forward that support the streamlining of day-to-day operations and enhance productivity.
  • Ensuring the successful delivery and effectiveness of projects, working with cross-functional teams (including business lines, technology partners etc.)
  • Working with business partners and support areas within the Bank to implement continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Building out a robust communication strategy across mortgage operations that provides awareness of the vision, strategy, and transparency for everyone on the various initiatives being worked on.
  • Produce robust reporting and analytics to performance manage team and share with senior leadership.
Provide strong leadership and motivate individual and team performance by:
  • Exhibiting strong leadership competencies that foster a growth mindset environment for the teams.
  • Embedding effective techniques within the groups to create a performance driven culture / enabling frontline to deliver excellent customer experience.

Understand how the Bank\'s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

  • Building out a robust training academy across operations and technology that supports new employee onboarding, and existing employee development.
  • Manage succession planning for key growth opportunities on members of teams.
  • Fostering an inclusive work environment where everyone\'s ideas are encouraged to be shared and people are encouraged to bring their best selves to work.
  • Demonstrate strong team leadership to motivate and sustain individual and team performance
Dimensions
  • Number of employees / span of control = ~130 people (hybrid team)
  • This team supports the operations of the Real Estate Secured Lending business in Canada - ~$250BN portfolio
  • Forecasted number of mortgages to be funded is ~100,000 annually
  • There are various optimization projects that need to be started in the team to drive productivity, efficiency, and take costs out of the business.
  • Direct oversight is required on day-to-day operations of both prefund and funding, and ensuring standard operating procedures and risk management practices are in place
Education / Experience / Other Information
  • 5-10 years of Financial Services / Retail Banking experience
  • Expert knowledge of Mortgage channel and solutions (including best in class technology and operating / customer experience models)
  • A solid strategy development background including in-depth experience and demonstrated success in leading multi-disciplinary initiatives of varying sizes and complexity, efficiently and effectively, ensuring all elements of change are considered understood and managed.
  • Outstanding leadership, communications and interpersonal skills that facilitate a positive and effective team environment at all levels of the organization; proven change agent
  • Excellent team leadership, coaching and management skills to effectively develop motivate and manage cross-functional teams to meet tight deadlines and manage and influence others.
  • Undergraduate degree in business or related field. Master degree is considered an asset
