The Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) changes lives by bringing people and knowledge together to reduce the harms of alcohol and other drugs on society. We partner with public, private and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to improve the health and safety of people living in Canada. An NGO with a national focus, CCSA envisions a healthier Canadian society where evidence transforms approaches to substance use.

The Director of Health Promotion and Prevention (DHPP) is responsible for leading CCSA\'s multifaceted health promotion portfolio with special focus on alcohol, cannabis and gambling. The DHPP brings national leadership knowledge in the field of substance use and addiction and provides guidance and leadership to a team of researchers and knowledge brokers. In collaboration with other divisions within CCSA and external partners, the Director leads CCSA\'s research activities and knowledge mobilization in health promotion and prevention. The DHPP is a member of CCSA\'s leadership team.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements strategic directions and associated budgets for CCSA priorities under health promotion and prevention
  • Leads CCSA\'s multifaceted health promotion and prevention research and knowledge
mobilization activities * Collaborates with external partners and communities most affected to identify needs and gaps in existing research and stay abreast of new developments in the field of addiction and substance use
  • Establishes strong working relationships and actively collaborates with key internal and external partners (e.g., Indigenous people, people with lived or living experience with substance use and addiction)
  • Guides researchers and knowledge brokers and sets standards in research and knowledge mobilization approaches
  • Looks for opportunities to obtain research grants nationally and provincially to achieve the vision and mandate of CCSA
  • Carries out divisional responsibilities in accordance with CCSA policies and practices, including managing the health promotion and prevention budget, leading performance, coaching staff and managing human resources
  • Seeks strategic opportunities and creates innovation initiatives that position CCSA to lead the health promotion field nationally and internationally, including the pursuit of research partnerships and external funding
  • Creates a high-performing team
  • Presents at key conferences and responds to media requests related to trends in the multifaceted health promotion field
  • Contributes to overall strategic and business planning and the activities of CCSA as part of the leadership team
  • Provides strategic advice in identifying gaps in partnerships and sustaining new francophone partnerships at a corporate level
  • Undertakes other responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications
  • Master\'s or doctoral degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., science, arts and humanities, health administration, public policy)
  • Minimum of 10 years working in the field of research or knowledge mobilization and minimum of eight years in a leadership or management role
  • Proven ability to engage diverse audiences and build effective partnerships and collaborations with organizations that represent diverse views, disciplines and sectors
  • Demonstrated experience in mentoring, coaching or professional development of staff, colleagues and partners
  • Subject matter expertise in the substance use and addiction field
  • Proven abilities as a systems thinker: ability to develop an understanding of systems issues, complex theory and partner engagement in addiction and other related fields
  • Exceptional skills in partner engagement and change management, including skills in negotiation, consensus building and conflict resolution
  • Experienced in developing research or knowledge mobilization partnerships and collaborations and a proven ability to gain credibility across the organization and with key partners
  • Experienced public speaker
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; in particular, superior writing skills to develop, review and write reports
  • Fluent bilingualism in English and French, oral and written
