Title: Director General

Reports to The Board of Directors

Terms Full-time: 35 hours/week Monday to Friday, occasional nights/weekends

Salary $63,700 to $87,446 as per DG Salary Scale

Overview and Core Responsibilities

The Director General (DG) is the champion of Our Harbour's (OH) mission and vision, ensuring that residents receive the highest quality care and support to meet their individual needs.

The DG is responsible for overseeing the following areas of management at Our Harbour:

1. Resident Care and Program Management

2. Human Resources/Volunteer Management

3. Operations and overall Administration

4. Financial and Risk Management

5. Networking and Relations with the Community and Funders

6. Collaboration with the Board of Directors in its governance role

7. Social Media and Communications

8. Funding and Fundraising

The Board of Directors may also assign new tasks and responsibilities, as it sees fit.

DG Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in administration or a relevant field of study. Minimum of five years experience in a similar position; a mix of education and experience may be considered. Knowledge of the healthcare sector. Understanding of the not-for-profit and charitable sector. Demonstrated ability to lead a team and achieve outcomes.

The DG's Responsibilities

1. Resident Care and Program Management

The DG's primary responsibility is to ensure that residents are provided housing, care, and compassion in line with the values of the organization.

Overseeing new resident program entrance, exit and, transition processes Ensuring a continuum of care that aligns with Our Harbours values and respects the safety, security and wellness of all residents in our community. Managing crises and other issues in collaboration with the Resident Care team Overseeing all aspects of the housing program, in accordance with available budget, including rentals, lease renewals, refurbishment or replacement of furnishings and appliances. Maintaining cordial relationships with property owners, and representing Our Harbour in complaint processes when necessary

2. Operations and Overall Administration

The DG manages the overall operations of OH.

Developing an annual Action Plan in collaboration with Board Committees. Establishing quantitative metrics and qualitative reports to help evaluate annual results in each area of operations and programming. Devising and implementing strategies to ensure that OH reaches its goals. Reporting results, successes, and challenges relative to the Action Plan to the Board. Simplifying, automating and rationalizing administrative tasks wherever possible to maximize the time available for the core mission of resident care. Ensuring that office space and resources are maintained, functional, comfortable, and optimal to support staff, workflow, and other uses/needs of this space.
3. Financial and Risk Management The DG is responsible for the fiscal integrity of OH.

Planning the annual financial needs of the organization, in collaboration with the Treasurer and Bookkeeper. Ensuring proper budget management to comply with Canadian accounting standards for charitable organizations and liaising with the auditors. Identifying and assessing risks to OH with respect to residents, human resources, assets, finances, reputation, and, in collaboration with the Board, implementing risk mitigation and control measures. Approving all OH's expenditures and administering the organization's financial resources in accordance with the approved budget and financial policy. Implementing processes to improve financial practice that align with the Board-approved financial policy. Ensuring that Our Harbour's Commercial and Directors and Officers Liability Insurance policies are up to date and accurate.

4. Human Resources / Volunteer Management

The DG is responsible for the overall well-being of the people that work at OH, including staff and volunteers.

Establishing a vibrant, positive, healthy, and safe work environment in accordance with appropriate legislation and regulations. Engaging actively OH staff, volunteers, board members, committees, and partners in advancing the organization's vision, mission, and strategic goals Leading, coaching, developing, and retaining a high performing staff that is motivated and inspired towards helping OH residents. Delegating tasks and activities to use resources effectively. Maintaining an effective organization structure, focused on delivery of the mission. Complying with human resources policies, procedures and practices. Overseeing all administrative HR functions, including payroll. Identifying future staffing needs and skill sets. Maintaining cooperative relationships with educational organizations to provide professional training opportunities for students in social services or related fields. Overseeing the Our Harbour volunteer program

5. Networking and Relations with the Community and Funders

The Director General (DG) is the public face of the organization and represents Our Harbour

to outside agencies.

Implementing the vision, as identified by the Board of Directors. The DG represents of Our Harbour to the network and the community. Maintaining positive and trusted relationships with government, private, corporate, foundation and community funders. Maintaining and expanding relationships with a broad range of non-funding partners that support our mission in a variety of ways Maintaining memberships, attending meetings and participating strategically in the initiatives of relevant Tables de Concertation and other groups. Promoting the organization's expertise in mental illness at public events and networking activities. Networking and representing the organization externally and promoting OH to improve the awareness of the organization with the public.

6. Collaboration with the Board of Directors in its governance role

The DG is accountable to, and reports to, the Board of Directors (BOD) providing regular updates and seeking input and feedback as necessary in the implementation of strategic goals and plans, demonstrating transparency and accountability.

Understanding the legal and organizational requirements for governance practices
and supporting the Board in its governance duties.

Maintaining and updating, in collaboration with the Secretary of the Board, meeting minutes, resolutions, corporate files and records, as required by law. Participating actively as an ex-officio officer in all Board and relevant Committee meetings. Working with the Board to develop the organization's strategic plans, annual action plans and financial budgets Informing the Board of potential high-level risks that may impact the organization. Providing opportunities for training to Board members to improve their governance practices and skills. Supporting the Board of Director's review of OH's existing policies, by-laws and the development of additional or new policies as required by law or otherwise.

7. Social media and Communications

Working with the Social Media and Communications (SMC) Chair and team to develop and deliver Our Harbour's communications strategy. Emphasizing and maintaining our profile as a unique English-language resource in the Monteregie. Producing and distributing, or publishing online, tools and materials to communicate our mission, activities, priority needs, successes, and challenges. Ensuring the maintenance, updating, functionality, and integration of all Our Harbour social media platforms. Acting as the OH Privacy Officer. Seeking and leveraging strategic opportunities to broaden our reach and expand our audience.

8. Funding and Fundraising

Working with the Board to ensure adequate funding to achieve OH's strategic objectives. Seeking, applying for, and managing, new funding for programs and projects to meet resident needs. Renewing current funding from government programs at the provincial and federal levels. Exploring new sources of government and private revenues to reduce the risk of reliance on funders Overseeing all individual fundraising activities, including developing strategic approaches to private and individual giving. Planning and launching, in collaboration with the Individual Fundraising Committee, a 5-year, planned giving campaign with a view to establishing and growing an endowment fund to assure the long-term vitality of our mission. Ensuring appropriate and timely reporting to the Board and funding bodies. Overseeing effective, targeted, and timely stewardship of all donors, including reports, activities, and personal, meaningful interactions.

Pay: $60,000.00-$87,000.00 per year
