Job Summary The Director, Financial Risk Management, Sun Life International supports the Sun Life International CRO in overseeing the financial and model risks in Sun Life International\xe2\x80\x99s financial reporting, operation, business planning and strategic initiatives, ensuring the risk profile and mitigants are aligned with the Risk Management Framework and Risk Appetite. The role partners with various functional areas in Sun Life international to promote risk culture, serves as the financial risk and model risk knowledge resource for Sun Life International teams and as the expert to provide inputs and supports CRO in reviewing and challenging 1st LOD management decision-making process in various risk topics such as risk capacity utilization, risk / return trade-off for business initiatives.
What you will do:

  • Providing oversight which allows for the effective development and management of processes for assessing key risk exposures for Sun Life International (including emerging risks), coordinating with all functional areas to develop a comprehensive in-depth risk exposure profile for the business overall; updates on an ongoing basis as new risks emerge.
  • Provides expertise / guidance to BU functional areas in the key risk identification and emerging risks processes. Involved in discussions related to risk capacity utilization, challenge of BUs in decision-making process for addressing risk issues (risk limits, risk capacity utilization, risk / return trade-off, etc.).
  • Actively engage with ALM, investment area to look for opportunities with a risk lens to enhance the risk/return profile with proper hedging investment strategies for existing block and for new business. Collaborate with product development, distribution and underwriting to manage the product development process with a risk-based view.
  • Bridge Corporate/Asia Model Risk Manage and Sun Life International to provide guidance on model risk management practice. Oversee the Models and End User Computing (MEUC) tools inventory, model testing/validation reporting.
  • Builds collective knowledge of Risk Management by sharing best practices around technical risk content and provides/facilitates training on risk-based issues as required
  • Recommends to the US CRO alternatives to further enhance the use of risk metrics in advice and challenge management on risk issues, including optimization of use of risk capacity.
  • Works collaboratively across all functional areas in Sun Life International to ensure sufficient oversight and challenge is being delivered in support of Enterprise Policies.
What you will need to succeed:
  • Excellent financial and business acumen will enable this individual to communicate effectively with members of finance, risk management, actuarial teams, and senior management.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills are essential.
  • Excellent relationship building and influencing skills, adaptability, and credibility are essential traits. The individual must be self-assured and capable of working effectively with senior executives, business group leaders, and functional area leaders.
  • In-depth understanding of all key financial risks is a key aspect of this role, especially the risks embedded in life products for HNW and UHNW market.
  • A team-based, collaborative management style.
  • Must have a big-picture, strategic perspective, be well-organized and possess strong attention to detail.
Required Education and Experience:
  • FSA and possess a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in senior actuarial roles, with specific experience in financial risk management
  • Experience in consulting or a large, complex, global organization would be an asset as the candidate will be expected to work within a matrix structure.
  • A high level of knowledge of accounting, capital markets, and investments would also be an asset.
