Job Description


We are looking for an Associate Director to join our Private Markets Investment Risk team in Toronto.

Under the leadership of the Managing Director and Head of Private Markets Investment Risk, the team provides investment risk management advisory and oversight for Private Markets including Infrastructure and Private Equity (Buyout, Green-tech & Growth Equity, Strategic Holdings, Life Sciences and Ventures) portfolios and represents OMERS on Oxford\xe2\x80\x99s Real Estate Investment Committee on investments above certain thresholds. The Private Markets Investment Risk team works closely with the broader investment, asset management, Strategy, Legal & Compliance and Finance teams, and collaborates across the entire Risk function, to assess risks and integrate effective risk management practices to support investment decision making with the ultimate goal of promoting a robust risk culture that encourages transparency, appropriate constructive challenge and dialogue.

Obtain visibility with Executive and Risk Leadership, including the CIO and CRO through the development and presentation of insights with transaction risk reviews and/or portfolio risk reviews

Develop a deep understanding of the private assets portfolio while working with and learning from seasoned investors and risk professionals in one of the premier direct investments platforms.

As a member of our team, you will be responsible for:

Performing transaction risk reviews for new investments and dispositions across Private Equity and Infrastructure by working closely with the risk and investment teams to ensure key risks are properly identified, well understood, and incorporated into the investment assumptions.

Drafting transaction risk memos that are submitted to the Head of Private Equity or Infrastructure, the Transaction Advisory Committee (TAC), and/or the Board Investment Committee (IC), discussing the key risks and assessing the implications of the proposed investments/dispositions for the broader portfolio.

Performing market analysis and conducting asset and portfolio risk reviews while collaborating with risk leadership, investment, asset management, Strategy, Legal & Compliance and Finance teams to ensure a thorough and thoughtful evaluation of portfolio risk. Identify trends and emerging risks within portfolios and prepare impactful presentations to communicate findings to different audiences (e.g., Head of Private Equity or Infrastructure, CIO, CRO, and others).

Develop a variety of fundamental and quantitative analytics and create top-down and bottoms-up financial models to stress test investments and forecast portfolio performance / sensitivities under different scenarios.

Ongoing tracking and monitoring of existing investments. Review and/or assignment of risk ranks / ratings for watch-listing purposes.

Engage on a variety of projects / initiatives and provide subject matter expertise collaborating with risk analytics, total plan, capital markets and enterprise risk to ensure private markets risks are well understood, accurately modeled, reported and incorporated in OMERS appropriate governance and oversight processes.

Provide support in coaching, training and development of analysts and associates of the private market risks team.

To succeed in this role, you should have:

5 to 12 years of experience in a high-performance role with measurable results.

Risk, investing or consulting / advisory experience in one or more private markets asset classes (PE, Infra, Real Estate or Private Credit) with a strong understanding of financial statement analysis, valuation methodologies, performance metrics, benchmarks, and portfolio construction concepts.

A university degree in a quantitative field, such as business, finance, economics, or mathematics.

Strong analytical, quantitative, organizational skills and attention to detail, while adhering to tight deadlines.

Experience with data analysis and familiarity with statistical concepts.

Ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team and collaborate across OMERS.

Outstanding sense of emotional ownership and strong work ethic.

Excellent communication, data visualization and presentation skills with an ability to communicate quantitative and market concepts succinctly and complex information in a digestible format to senior audiences.

Highly skilled in Excel with proficiency in utilizing financial software and tools (e.g. Bloomberg and/or Capital IQ) for data sourcing and analysis.

A graduate degree, CFA, FRM and/or CAIA designation are a plus.

Equity research and/or corporate credit analysis experience is a plus.

Knowledge of Power BI for creating insightful data visualizations and interactive financial dashboards and coding skills (Python, R, MatLab, etc.) is a plus.
