EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY DESIGNATED REPRESENTATIVE – HAIDA NATION, OLD MASSETT Location: Gaw Tlagée Old Massett Wage: $45/hour Posting Expiry: August 26, 2022 Haida Child & Family is a Haida-led organization providing culturally appropriate, wrap around services to Haida children and families. Position Summary Reporting to the Executive Director, the Designated Representative will advocate for, and represent, the best interests of Haida children involved in the child protection system. This position requires the incumbent to provide support, advocacy and guidance for children, youth and families of the Haida Nation that are involved with any child protection agency (or ministry) throughout the country. This position will predominately represent Haida children, youth and families originating from Gaw Tlagée or Old Massett/Northern Haida Gwaii. The Designated Representative acts on behalf of the people of the Haida Nation/community as a party in court proceedings involving Haida children and youth. The objective of this position is to: o Ensure that notifications from all child protection agencies are responded to in a timely manner o Ensure that the representative is present or available to be included when Haida children and youth are involved with any child protection agency o Promote the best interests of Haida children and youth and ensure that their rights to be connected to their Nation and community are respected and upheld by the courts/child protection process Learn more about us at ************* Key Responsibilities o Acting as a party in court proceedings on behalf of the community/Nation in the best interest of Haida children and youth o Providing Haida children, youth and families with advocacy support and information about child protection and family court processes o Liaising with local governments, agencies, social workers and service providers in the best interest of Haida children, youth and families o Connecting with the appropriate family, clan and community members of the children and youth to inform them of and ensure their involvement in the court/protection process General Duties o Depending on the case, the Designated Representative may undertake the following activities:

  • Liaise with other Designated Representatives, child protection agencies, social workers, family members, community members, clan members
  • Accompany child protection/ministry workers during child protection investigations
  • Ensure that Haida children, youth and families are fully aware of their rights
  • Work with Haida Child & Family team to ensure that Haida children in care are connecting with their Haida culture
o Community Representation:
  • Represent the Haida Nation and Gaw Tlagée at court as a Party to child protection proceedings
  • Assist with the preparations of Plans of Care, including advocating and making recommendations for placement of children, as well as ensure they are implemented
  • Prepare, respond to and process legal documents as required by the BC Court Rules
o Administrative:
  • Meet with Haida Child and Family team on a regular basis
  • Ensure client files are maintained and updated on a regular basis
  • Strong computer skills
  • Report to the Haida Nation and the Band Councils as directed
  • Data collection and submission of reports as directed
Qualifications and Experience o Must have strong connections to, and knowledge of, the Gaw Tlagée/Northern Haida Gwaii community o Must be a citizen of the Haida Nation as per the Constitution of the Haida Nation* with preference given to applicants originating from and/or with strong ties to the Gaw Tlagée/Northern Haida Gwaii community o Must have sound knowledge of the child welfare system, the Child, Family and Community Services Act (CFCSA), and An Act Respecting First Nations, Inuit and Metis children, youth and families (Bill C-92) o Must possess strong advocacy skills, and demonstrate the ability to execute them under pressure o Must have knowledge of Haida culture and history, and the impact of colonization on Haida families and communities o Preference is given to individuals with a combination of Education and Professional experience o Applicant must have own vehicle, a valid driver’s license and be willing to submit a Driver’s Abstract o Applicant must successfully undergo a Solicitor General Criminal Record Check o Be willing to be based on Haida Gwaii o Experience working with Haida families and children at risk is an asset o Experience working with child protection is an asset o Able to build relationships with caregivers and community members o Able to interpret legislation and legal documents o Knowledge of case management techniques o Strong written and verbal skills o Strong demonstration of negotiation skills, techniques and advocacy o Willing to work flexible hours and travel with minimal notice o Must demonstrate clear professional boundaries and appropriate accountability measures including file/records management and client confidentiality o Experience developing detailed plans and timelines, as well as managing deadlines and competing priorities o Able to develop healthy working relationships with colleagues at Haida Child & Family and other partner organizations. Must be a team player and able to work independently when necessary
  • A2 S1. All people of Haida ancestry are citizens of the Haida Nation
Working Conditions o Monday to Friday schedule (35-hour week) but flexibility is needed from time to time, including occasional evenings o Travel between communities will be required o Travel off island will likely be required o Must be able to obtain and maintain a Criminal Records Check o Must be able to obtain and maintain a BC Driver’s License o Must be willing and able to work remotely Pursuant to Section 41 of the BC Human Rights Code, preference may be given to qualified applicants of Aboriginal ancestry. Job Types: Full-time, Permanent Salary: From $45.00 per hour Schedule:
  • 8 hour shift
