Summary
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented
Customs & Trade Specialist (e-commerce)
to manage customs clearance activities for e-commerce and B2B shipments entering Canada. The role ensures compliance with Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) regulations, facilitates smooth import processes, and supports efficient last-mile delivery for international e-commerce parcels. The ideal candidate has in-depth knowledge of Canadian customs procedures, e-commerce logistics, HS classification, and brokerage systems.
Responsibilities
1. Customs Clearance Operations
Prepare and submit accurate customs documentation for e-commerce imports into Canada.
Classify goods using proper HS codes and ensure valuation compliance with CBSA requirements.
Handle B3, B15, RMD, PARS, CLVS, and LVS (Low Value Shipment) processes as applicable.
Monitor customs releases and proactively resolve holds, rejections, or delays.
2. Compliance & Regulations
Ensure all entries comply with CBSA regulations, CARM (CBSA Assessment and Revenue Management) requirements, and other applicable trade laws.
Maintain updated knowledge of tariff changes, free trade agreements (CUSMA, CPTPP, etc.), and e-commerce-related regulations.
Advise internal teams and clients on import restrictions, duties, and taxes.
3. Client & Carrier Coordination
Liaise with e-commerce clients, freight forwarders, couriers, and CBSA officers to ensure timely clearance.
Provide guidance on duty/tax estimation and import compliance for e-commerce shipments.
Manage inquiries and disputes regarding duty/tax assessments and CBSA audits.
4. System & Documentation Management
Utilize customs brokerage systems (e.g., CARM Client Portal, brokerage software).
Maintain accurate records of shipments, entries, and compliance documentation for audits.
Track clearance KPIs (release time, compliance rate, and exception handling).
5. Process Improvement & Risk Management
Identify opportunities to streamline e-commerce clearance processes for high-volume parcels.
Support automation initiatives and digital tools for customs clearance.
Mitigate risks by ensuring strong internal controls and timely compliance reporting.
Qualifications
Licensed Canadian Customs Broker (CCS designation preferred; CTCS is an asset).
Minimum 3-5 years of customs brokerage experience, preferably in e-commerce, courier, or 3PL environments.
Strong knowledge of CBSA procedures, LVS programs, and upcoming CARM requirements.
Proficiency in HS classification, valuation methods, and duty/tax assessment.
Experience with customs brokerage systems and EDI processes.
Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume e-commerce environment.
