Marine Atlantic is currently accepting applications for various positions within the United Steelworkers union to work with our shore-based departments located in Port aux Basques, NL. These positions are spare and relief and candidates can expect to work on an on-call basis. We operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and therefore shifts could be days, evenings, backshifts with coverage also being required on weekends and holidays. The successful candidates will work as Ticket and Reservations Clerks and will receive additional training for some of the following positions based on education and work experience:
  • Senior Administration Tickets & Senior Administration Reservations - responsible for office administration and reservation/ticketing application administration.
  • Crew Clerk - assigns approved crew complement with the certificates/qualifications required for assignments on the vessels.
  • Administrative Assistant - provides administrative support to various departments.
  • Accounting Clerks (Payables, Receivables & Banking) - responsible for processing all purchase orders, recording all accounts receivable transactions for the company, accounting duties with a concentration in the analysis of banking and credits cards, and preparation and inputting of journal entries.
  • Payroll Clerk - prepares receiver general payments for EI, CPP and income taxes for accelerated remitters throughout the month, prepares records of employment for monthly vessel employees, and audits regular payroll processes.
  • Timekeeper - keeps records of daily time worked by employees, ensures vacations are taken as scheduled, calls unassigned employees for work and enters time into computer system.
  • Terminal Assistant - cleans the terminal and ticket booths; clears snow and spreads salt; and assists with baggage handling.

What qualifications do I need to be considered for this opportunity?
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalency
  • Ability to deal with the general public in a professional manner displaying excellent customer service skills
  • Competent typing skills (requirements of 25 wpm to a maximum of at least 50 wpm) and keyboarding skills
  • Computer literate, proficient with Microsoft Office
  • Relevant post secondary education preferred for selected positions
Preferred Asset Qualifications for Selected Positions
  • Office Administrative Assistant Diploma from a recognized institution.
  • Minimum Business/Accounting Diploma from a recognized institution.
  • Experience working in an office or call center environment.
  • Supervisory or team lead experience.
  • Experience working with a computerized ticket/reservation system,
  • supply chain/accounting system, and customer payment system.
  • Knowledge of general accounting practices.
  • Sound knowledge of employee scheduling procedures and computerized employee scheduling system.
  • Experience working with union agreements.
Please note: Candidates must successfully pass a typing test (requirements of 25 wpm to a maximum of at least 50 wpm), keyboarding testing and Microsoft Office testing. Candidates should live within commuting distance from the terminal. These positions are unionized and the successful candidates will become members of the United Steelworkers Union. Hourly Rate: Rates for positions range between $27.553 to $31.769.
