JOB SUMMARY
The Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Science (IKBFASS) brings together a diverse and unique community of learning and research that integrates the humanities and the social sciences as well as the computational and mathematical sciences.
This position is responsible for leading and inspiring IKBFASS in the planning, development, implementation, evaluation, and enhancement of broad-based and diversified educational initiatives and programs (undergraduate, graduate, and non-credit). This position provides subject matter expertise to faculty members on teaching and learning practices, including course and curriculum assessments and revisions. This position is critical in maintaining program innovation and effectiveness in support of the IKBFASS and UBC strategic plans. This position plays a leadership role in the advancement of teaching and excellence, which has direct impacts on the quality of IKBFASS programming.

This position contributes to various campus-wide curriculum design and evaluation initiatives. As such, this position is expected to establish and maintain contacts across both campuses and beyond.

This position reports to the Associate Dean, Teaching, Learning and Curriculum in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), who may delegate their responsibilities as required. This position remains current on the latest research and innovations in higher education curriculum development, and builds from that knowledge to establish and implement strategic plans and priorities for enhancing teaching and learning in the Faculty.

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
This position works independently and reports to the Dean or Dean\xe2\x80\x99s Delegate in the Faculty. This position works collaboratively with faculty and Department administrators. This position also interacts with staff, faculty members, and senior-level administrators in other Faculties and Schools, the Provost\'s Office, Enrolment Services, and with Associate Academic Governance Officers. While most interactions will occur with Okanagan administrative units, connections with UBC Vancouver\'s equivalent units may be required for some projects.

WORK PERFORMED
Curriculum & Academic Programs

  • Leads course and program development in consultation with internal and external stakeholders by undertaking projects from initial concept stage to completion. This includes research, defining project deliverables, timelines, resources, documentation, marketing strategy, budgeting, as well as ensuring compliance with University policies and government regulations.
  • Leads the development, design, and implementation of broad-based educational projects, including interdisciplinary degrees, majors, minors, non-credit programs, and certificates.
  • Leads curriculum mapping and program redesign in alignment with IKBFASS and UBC policies. This includes achieving the target set by UBC Okanagan in response to the 2021 Ministry Quality Assurance Process Audit recommendations to have program learning outcomes and assessment plans in place for all programs by 2027.
  • Supports instructors by identifying areas requiring improvement to ensure quality in content and program delivery.
  • Leads assessments of the current curriculum to identify gaps, redundancies and opportunities; provides guidance on improving alignment between individual courses and their programs.
  • Assists Departments undergoing Department and/or Program-level reviews.
  • Advises and supports Departments in addressing issues identified by self-studies and external academic reviews in pursuit of continuous improvement, curriculum renewal, and enhancing student learning experience.
  • Conducts instructional-design research and needs analyses to support Departments and develop program offerings at the undergraduate, graduate, and non-credit levels.
  • Manages the Student Directed Seminars program year-round. Responsibilities for managing this program include:
    • Developing and delivering information and proposal writing sessions for students and faculty;
    • Developing promotional and website materials in collaboration with the Communications office;
    • Developing application materials;
    • Coordinating the SDS Advisory Committee;
    • Developing the training program for Student Coordinators in collaboration with the Centre for Teaching and Learning;
    • Mentoring Student Coordinators and evaluating their progress in the SDS training;
    • Monitor seminar recruitment and registration, promoting as necessary through our Faculty social media, Departments, Course Unions, etc.
    • Overseeing seminar delivery by regularly communicating with Student Coordinators and their Faculty Sponsors, as well as facilitating surveys with student participants;
    • Evaluating the SDS program on an annual basis to ensure continual growth and improvement.


Teaching and Learning Excellence
  • Provides leadership, subject matter expertise, and management in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of teaching, learning, and curriculum projects.
  • Identifies faculty training needs and areas for further development in teaching and learning practices. Designs, develops and delivers workshops and information sessions on related topics for faculty, potentially in collaboration with external offices, such as the Centre for Teaching and Learning, Library, Provost\xe2\x80\x99s Office, etc. This may include organizing retreats and working groups to inform develop, improvement, and integration of educational initiatives.
  • Maintains proficiency with recent trends in teaching and learning strategies and curriculum development nationally and internationally.
  • Provides pedagogical support to faculty in areas such as course design, learning outcomes, inclusive and equitable pedagogies, learner-centered approaches to teaching and curriculum, assessment of learning, integrating Open Education Resources, experiential learning, Universal Design for Learning, Indigenization, and other related areas.
  • Consults with faculty to evaluate the effectiveness of learning opportunities, materials and methods.


Leadership & Administration
  • Provides subject matter expertise and guidance on UBC Okanagan Senate curriculum guidelines, policies and procedures and assistance in execution of same, to faculty and Departments, and to the Dean or Dean\xe2\x80\x99s Delegate. This may include consulting the Provost\xe2\x80\x99s Office and collaborating on significant curriculum proposals that require compliance with the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training standards.
  • Develops guidelines, systems and organizational practices to support curriculum development and academic programs management.
  • Manages the IKBFASS Curriculum Committee and the Bachelor of Arts Standing Committee. Both committees require coordinating committee membership, meeting planning and organisation, preparing and providing supporting documentation, providing minutes, and following up on action items.
  • Provides training and guidance for Department faculty curriculum representatives to ensure the success of regular curriculum renewal and development.
  • Advises Departments on the effectiveness and accuracy of their program requirements, including the language used to articulate these requirements in the Academic Calendar. This may require consultation with Academic Advising and Enrolment Services.
  • Consults and provides recommendations on student transfer credit requests and articulation for the Bachelor of Arts Degree requirements.
  • Manages the course category submission process for the Bachelor of Arts Degree requirements, which includes supporting faculty with their submissions and advising on course learning outcomes evaluations.
  • Works with the IKBFASS Communications Manager to develop and maintain a communication plan for teaching, learning, and curriculum initiatives and procedures to include online communication with students and faculty.
  • Coordinates, monitors, and provides regular assessments of experiential learning activities in the Faculty.
  • Develops and implements internal and external funding proposals, independently and collaboratively, for strategic educational program initiatives.
  • Ensures accuracy of the draft Faculty Academic Calendar pages, which may include significant proofreading to ensure all recent curriculum proposals made by IKBFASS are included.
  • Reports on student enrolment, market evaluations, and financial impact of programs.
  • Manages large repositories of curricular materials.
  • Manages staff performance, establishes clear expectations, evaluates performance in collaboration with the Associate Dean, fosters a positive working environment, promotes skill development, and enables decision-making.
  • Provides other related duties as required.


CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR
This is a key position in the Irving K. Barber Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, which plays a pivotal role in supporting the academic strategic direction of the Faculty. Adherence to dates and timelines is critical. Effectiveness in curriculum development is critical to enable programs to meet their mandate for supporting the learning, teaching and administrative needs of the Faculty.
As such, the quality of one\xe2\x80\x99s work has both immediate and long-term impacts on the Faculty\xe2\x80\x99s economic development and effectiveness. Errors in judgement may result in the inefficient use of resources, the provision of substandard educational experience for students, and consequently may damage the impact and reputation of individual faculty members, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the University.
This role must exercise an outstanding degree of tact, professional judgement, discretion and initiative in dealings with collaborators and stakeholders. Inappropriate actions or judgement could damage the Faculty\xe2\x80\x99s working relationships and credibility, incur inappropriate costs, and jeopardize the Faculty\xe2\x80\x99s ability to offer high-quality programming and demonstrate leadership in the area of curriculum. A breach of privacy and policy may result in legal liability and/or have financial implications to the University.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position works independently with considerable autonomy and a high-level of accountability. This position reports to the Associate Dean, Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum in the Faculty, who may delegate their supervisory responsibilities as required. Work is reviewed by the Associate Dean in terms of achievement of broad goals.
SUPERVISION GIVEN
Provides guidance and training for Department leadership, faculty and staff related to teaching, learning, and curriculum. Directly supervises the Curriculum, Awards, Academic Programs, and Students Coordinator. May supervise external consultants, support staff, and student employees.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum
  • Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in Education.
  • Minimum of seven years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred
  • Master\xe2\x80\x99s degree in Education or related discipline required, ideally with a focus on curriculum development.
  • Extensive experience in curriculum development and educational program planning, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Experience with diverse methods of quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis, and making strategic recommendations for action.
  • Excellent knowledge of current theories, instructional design, faculty and curriculum development with respect to higher education teaching and learning.
  • Familiarity with the UBC Calendar, the academic structure of the University, the UBC Curriculum approval process is an asset.
  • Understanding of UBC and Ministry of Advanced Education Skills and Training policies and procedures is an asset.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Workday, One Drive and SharePoint, Adobe Acrobat, and Qualtrics.
  • Superior oral and written communication skills, including reporting and analysis skills to present research findings, reports, and proposals.
  • Excellent analytical reasoning, problem solving, time management, planning, project management, supervisory, administrative, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and collaborate on cross-functional and multi-disciplinary teams, multitasking, establishing priorities, and meeting deadlines with minimal direction.
