Job Summary


Terry L. Brandon is a very busy criminal defence lawyer who, after three decades plus, seeks a highly skilled and detail-oriented barrister to join our team at Brandon Law Professional Corporation.

The ideal candidate will provide expert legal advice, represent clients in court, and contribute to the development of legal strategies.

This role requires strong research, negotiation, and drafting skills, along with fearless courtroom advocacy. The successfully hired barrister will engage in a vital role to ensure our clients receive exceptional legal representation and guidance across a variety of criminal and quasi-criminal cases rooted in the CRIMINAL CODE OF CANADA, the CONTROLLED DRUGS & SUBSTANCES ACT and the YOUTH CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACT, and limited provincial offences legislation.

Responsibilities



Represent clients in OCJ & SCJ court proceedings, INCLUDING: bail hearings, bail variation applications, confirmation and focusing hearings, judicial pretrials, preliminary hearings, judge alone & jury trials and negotiations with professionalism and confidence leading to guilty pleas, diversions, gladue hearings and sentencing circles Conduct comprehensive legal research to support case strategies Draft legal documents, including pleadings, briefs, factums and other necessary filings with precision and clarity Provide expert legal advice to clients regarding their rights, obligations, and potential outcomes of cases Review disclosure and competently interview clients Develop and implement effective negotiation strategies to achieve favorable results for clients Stay current on relevant laws, regulations, and legal precedents to ensure compliance and effective advocacy Collaborate with colleagues and support staff to prepare case materials and coordinate legal efforts Maintain strict confidentiality Engage in keeping detailed records of case activities and ensure all documentation is accurate and up-to-date, including file notes and court date calendars Timely engagement with legal aid file management and preparation & submission of legal aid billings

Qualifications



Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school or LLB Admission to the bar in Ontario - active licensing status A character of perfectionism in your approach to the practice of law but with a balanced sense of humanity & self humour will serve you well in our office Honesty and integrity are a must- as a hired gun personality need not apply Proven experience as a criminal defence lawyer or a very strong desire to launch a criminal defence career following highly successful related academic success with strong letters of support You must possess strong constitutional law knowledge and a desire to advance Charter challenges Knowledge of Legal Aid duties & responsibilities is a must, along with an ability to effectively work within the LAO protocol and mandates to best service marginalized client needs Proficient research skills with knowledge of a variety of legal research platforms focusing on criminal law Skillful & quick-speed keyboarding and accuracy of date input & record keeping Experience with LEAP law support software, is an asset Excellent negotiation abilities with a track record of successful case resolutions Exceptional writing skills for drafting clear, concise, and persuasive legal documents Solid understanding of legal drafting standards and procedures Outstanding analytical thinking, problem-solving capabilities, and attention to detail Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a team environment You must have a basic understanding of addiction issues & rehabilitation solutions Knowledge/training or experience with mental health engagement in the criminal justice system is an asset This position offers an engaging opportunity for a dedicated legal professional eager to make a meaningful societal & individual impact through expert advocacy and strategic case management A successful associate may progress to fulfill succession planning in consultation with senior counsel The best qualification, as a barrister, that you require to be able to successfully join Brandon Law Professional Corporation is a likeminded mission field vision to criminal law

Pay: $47,873.74-$124,973.23 per year
