Interior Health is hiring a Coordinator, Relational Security Operations to join the Protection Services department.

About the role:

The Coordinator, Relational Security Operations, is accountable to the Corporate Director, Protection Services in supporting the delivery of Protection Services\xe2\x80\x99 programs across Interior Health (IH). The Coordinator is responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of programs within the assigned area in accordance with established standards and in support of the goals and strategic direction of IH.

Some key duties:

  • Responsible for the day-to-day management of security services within assigned portfolio and, in consultation with the Corporate Director, ensures compliance with performance standards.

  • Acts as liaison and provides consultative advice to Health Service Area leadership, Administrators, Directors/Managers regarding security activities; participates in the development of action plans for the assigned area of responsibility including the investigation and determination of appropriate outcomes; provides advice to, and participates with, Human Resources, the Director/ Manager, and others in security investigations and activities involving staff.

  • Promotes awareness of Protection Services\xe2\x80\x99 programs by developing and delivering informational and educational programs (such as management of aggressive behaviour, loss prevention, and personal safety/security) and participates in the review and evaluation of these programs.

  • Participates in and coordinates the development, implementation, maintenance, and evaluation of programs, policies, and procedures in the assigned area of responsibility across IH.

  • Provides management, leadership, and supervision to staff in line with established directives and policies relating to the mission and goals of the organization and develops procedures to guide staff in carrying out their duties.

  • Hires, appraises, and disciplines staff, up to and including termination. Manages employee attendance and coordinates the Attendance Promotion Program within the department. Carries out employee performance evaluations.

  • Plans, directs, and participates in orientation and on-going education programs for in-house personnel as well as students from recognized training programs/educational institutions as required.

  • Authorizes vacation, overtime, and paid and unpaid leave while ensuring the operational needs of the department are met.

  • Provides a safe working environment for all staff within the portfolio, including monitoring compliance, investigating incidents and implementing safe working procedures. May be required to participate in local or regional safety committees.

  • Labour relations responsibilities include involvement with the grievance process up to and including settlement; updating, negotiating, and implementing strike contingency plans including essential staffing levels; Step 3 Labour Management meetings; and third party hearings as required. Works in conjunction with Human Resources in the interpretation of collective agreements.

  • Provides support in managing operating and capital budgets for the assigned area of responsibility, including budget preparation, control, and reporting of expenditures, ensuring the efficient utilization of financial resources.

  • Interprets and administers collective agreements; participates in the investigation of and response to grievances and routine, confidential employee issues; and participates in Third Party hearings.

  • In cooperation with affected departments/personnel, Human Resources, and external agencies, conducts risk and threat assessments and makes recommendations relating to safety and security issues.

  • Conducts Physical Security and Crime Prevention through Environmental Design Assessments, provides reports to IH Clinical and Administrative Leaders.

  • Coordinates with the Lead, Protection Services on issues related to systems and technology of the assigned area of responsibility, under the authority of the Manager, including the monitoring and management of capital funds assigned for security technology.

  • Consults, on behalf of IH, with external agencies and organizations such as fire, police, emergency response agencies, and other hospitals on issues relating to security.

  • Authorizes expenditures for utilization of contract security staff; and assists with budget preparation by providing input and by preparing supporting documentation.

  • Maintains an information system of activities, investigations, incidents, losses, and resolutions. Produces related statistics and reports.

  • Participates, as a representative of Protection Services and of IH, on internal and external committees.

  • Provides after hours on-call function for Protection Services across IH, as required.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Education, Training, and Experience
  • Grade 12 diploma plus specialized training and/or experience in fire safety, disaster planning, criminology, or a related field.
  • Five (5) years of related management experience in a large institutional or campus environment, preferably in a healthcare setting.
  • Membership with IAHSS (International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety).
  • Certification as an instructor in a non-violent crisis intervention program and working knowledge of appropriate legislation and provincial/national standards on fire safety, building codes, municipal by-laws, security, working with security systems and related technology and protection of privacy is an asset.

Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, plan, direct, manage, and implement.
  • Demonstrated ability to make presentations to groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively in a highly dynamic environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of personal computers and computerized systems.
  • Valid Canadian drivers license equivalent to a BC Class 5 drivers license without any graduated licensing restrictions.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
