The precise composition of this term appointment (possibility of renewal) will be determined based on the pool of applicants and intersections with staffing decisions in the Faculty of Arts. This term position leads programs that cross UPEI faculties and serve the University broadly. For administrative purposes, this position rests in the Faculty of Arts with a direct reporting line to the Dean of Arts.
Qualifications:
The successful applicant for the Instructor and Coordinator of the University 1000 Program should have:
experience teaching courses populated by first-year university students from numerous faculties
awareness of and sensitivity to the experiences and contexts of first-year students
demonstrable evidence of success as a teacher of first-year university students
familiarity with scholarly and professional literature on the first-year experience(s)
demonstrable evidence of commitment to high quality student experience, student engagement, and retention
leadership and administrative skills in the context of a small program with teaching colleagues
a Masters or PhD in a field that broadly aligns with the position
A successful applicant for the combined University 1000 and BIS Coordinator should have, additionally:
experience working with mature students returning to university or those beginning their university studies as mature students would be an asset
awareness of and sensitivity to the experiences and contexts of mature students
familiarity with scholarly and professional literature on the mature student experience(s)
experience providing academic advising to students, including helping them to develop program plans and advising in course selection
established professional relationships within the UPEI context, especially the Registrar's Office, Recruitment, and Marketing and Communications, and/or strong networking and liaising skills that can be used to build those relationships
familiarity with Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) would be an asset
Responsibilities:
As Instructor and Coordinator of the University 1000 Program responsibilities include but may not be limited to:
teach sections of University 1030, and possibly University 2030 and 3030
provide coordination, leadership, and mentorship to instructors in the University 1000 program, both individually and through monthly meetings
as appropriate, work with Experiential Learning, the Robertson Library, and the Teaching and Learning Centre to support various aspects of the courses and their instruction
while adhering to the Collective Agreement with the Faculty Association (BU1)
o plan and administer the annual timetable
o staff multiple sections of 1030 and possibly Univ. 2030 and Univ. 3030
o conduct annual evaluations of instructors
o meet other obligations assigned to Coordinators
various administrative tasks including but not limited to attendance at Faculty of Arts Chairs meetings, First-Year Suite Coordinators meetings, preparation of reports and information documents, participation in orientation activities, etc.
As Coordinator of the Bachelor of Integrated Studies responsibilities include but may not be limited to:
advising and assisting students considering enrolment in the BIS program
advising and assisting students with Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition and managing the PLAR portfolio
assessing credit for students' prior programs and courses
advising and assisting students with course selection, progress through their degree, and individual program planning
executing the sessional instructor hiring process for BIS 193 bi-annually
hosting workshops and information sessions about the BIS and PLAR process to assist with recruitment to the program and, in consultation with Marketing, assist in the development of a new marketing/recruitment campaign
liaising with various offices at UPEI, including the Registrar's Office, Marketing and Communications, other faculties, and generally engaging in campus activities that promote the profile of the program, etc.
