Position Purpose



The Cook plans, coordinates and maintains kitchen facilities for the provision of complete, culturally-appropriate, nutritional meals for the clients. The position involves ensuring the kitchen is maintained in a sanitary condition, tracking the kitchen inventory/supplies, organizing the necessary paperwork for accounting purposes and supervising client kitchen duties.

Responsibilities



Service



Maintain the kitchen in an orderly and sanitary condition as required by Toronto Public Health. Plan a well-balanced diet as dictated by the National Dietary Standards of Canada. Co-ordinate serving meals to clients and present the food in an attractive and appealing fashion. Maintain an advanced inventory of supplies to ensure the provision of a nutritional diet including a daily supply of milk, bread and fresh foods. Prepare and make available any special diets as needed. Provide evening snacks for clients seven (7) days each week and/or as per program guidelines. Monitor and maintain kitchen appliances. Supervise client kitchen duties. Provide recipes and required paperwork on a weekly basis. Provide menu with daily meals/snacks logged and required documentation on a weekly basis and develop menus for a three (3) week cycle. Provide meals/snacks for the childcare program as required. Collaborate with the supervisor to discuss job performance and professional development goals.

Organizational



Conduct job responsibilities with a commitment to harm reduction, trauma- informed, women-centred and anti-oppressive practices. Abide by the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and work in a manner that is safe, reporting incidents immediately to direct supervisor. Adhere to the policies and procedures of The Jean Tweed Centre. Perform other duties as assigned in order to meet the overall goals and objectives of The Jean Tweed Centre. Maintain a client service orientation including learning about/addressing client needs and concerns. Work collaboratively including respect others, sharing information, consulting and celebrating shared successes. Demonstrate accountability by holding self responsible and following through on commitments. Support inclusion and equity by respecting others, embracing diversity and addressing oppression. Commit to continuous learning through professional development, giving and receiving constructive feedback and applying new skills.

Qualifications



Grade 10 education or equivalent combination of skills and experience satisfactory to the Centre. Minimum 2 years experience in the food services industry. Sound knowledge of good nutrition and menu planning with specific skills in meal preparation and record keeping. Ability to relate to all levels of personnel, clients and visitors. Ability to function in an occasionally stressful environment. Ability to maintain client confidentiality at all times. Ability to communicate courteously and respectfully to staff and clients Food handler certificate and WHMIS training.
