Job Description


DescriptionThis is a hands-on cook position which supervises the dietary aides and the cooks when the food services manager is not available. In the absence of the food services manager, they make decisions on menu changes, food orders, food service delivery and/or staff schedules in consultation with the executive director or designate.Hours:

  • Wednesday to Sunday - 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM
  • ** Includes extended benefits, paid vacation leave, stat pay, shift premiums **
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists with receiving and storage of products using FIFO method.
  • Works with Food Services Team and prepares food for special events.
  • Cooks, bakes, and tastes food on a consistent basis, including but not limited to meats, fish, vegetables, soups, sauces, desserts, cookies, muffins, sandwiches, and salads.
  • Able to organize and have food prepared on time for meal service that are of high quality and are well presented.
  • Works accurately in both imperial and metric.
  • Prepares alternates for special diets -reduced salt and diabetic.
  • Understands the importance of consistency in special diets for the health of residents.
  • Demonstrates flexibility in making substitutions in menus when warranted.
  • Provides meals at unscheduled times if requested by resident.
  • Does preparation for next day, including making sure items are taken out of freezer as per Food Safe standards.
  • Adheres to principles/directives of Food Safe in storage, handling, and preparation of food.
  • Consistently keeps work areas clean and sanitized.
  • Understands the importance of making sure the correct meal is served when requested.
  • Understands the Assisted Living and Independent Living concepts.
  • Operates all equipment safely as per operating procedures.
  • Works cooperatively with all food services staff to ensure smooth, professional delivery of service.
  • Assists with managing leftovers and clean up at the end of shift.
  • Orders food supplies on online websites, in the absence of Food Services Manager, or as requested.
  • Communicates with food suppliers and online vendors regarding orders and solving issues.
  • Able to adjustment the menu due to shortfalls by using Microsoft Word and Excel, in the absence of the Food Services Manager.
  • Assists with scheduling as required.
  • Notifies Food Services Manager of any concerns with residents, staff, inventory, recipes, or menu items.
  • Directs Dietary Aides in portioning or prep of items for meal service, and problem solving with day-to-day tasks.
  • Supervises Cooks in the absence of the Food Service manager.
  • Monitors and records food temperatures during storage, preparation, cooking, and service all phases of foods served. (HACCAP standards are to be met)
  • Assists with cleaning kitchen and washing dishes as required.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:Education/Certifications:
  • High school diploma
  • A Culinary Arts Cooking certificate or equivalent
  • Five years\' experience in quantity cooking preferably in the service industry
  • Food Safe Level 1
  • WHMIS certificate
  • Current negative TB test
  • Able to pass a Criminal Record check

  • Ability to read and implement recipes and work routines

  • Able to taste all prepared foods
  • Able to operate a computer and related software
  • Able to use Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Able to order food supplies online
  • A disposition for working with seniors
