Position Summary

Above and Beyond Care Services Inc. is seeking a passionate and dynamic

Recreation and Wellness Coordinator

to design and implement therapeutic and leisure-based programs that enhance the quality of life for clients living with disabilities, mental health challenges, and addictions.


This role is ideal for someone who is client-centered, trauma-informed, and motivated to lead a growing department that will eventually expand services to external agencies and the broader community.

Key Responsibilities

Program Development and Facilitation

Design, implement, and evaluate individualized and group-based recreational, wellness, and therapeutic programs. Incorporate physical, emotional, spiritual, and social well-being in all activities. Facilitate indoor and outdoor activities that are culturally sensitive, inclusive, and adapted to meet diverse needs and abilities. Promote meaningful engagement by tailoring programs to client interests, strengths, and goals. Organize community outings, workshops, and events to promote social inclusion and life skills.

Client-Centered Practice

Collaborate with care teams to align programming with individual support plans (ISPs). Use trauma-informed approaches to build trust, promote autonomy, and reduce barriers to participation. Encourage client input and feedback for continuous program improvement. Support clients in building self-esteem, managing stress, and developing interpersonal skills.

Departmental Leadership and Growth

Contribute to the vision and strategic development of a new Recreation & Wellness department. Develop standard operating procedures, risk management protocols, and measurable outcomes for wellness initiatives. Explore opportunities for community partnerships and potential revenue streams through external contracts.

Administrative Responsibilities

Maintain accurate attendance, participation records, and client progress notes. Complete incident reports as required and report concerns to management promptly. Assist in budgeting, supply inventory, and resource coordination. Participate in team meetings and interdisciplinary case discussions.

Qualifications

Education & Certifications:

Diploma or Degree in Recreation Therapy, Social Work, Addictions & Community Support, Disability Studies, or a related human services field. Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) is an asset. CPR/First Aid (required or willingness to obtain). Valid Class 5 Driver's License (preferred).

Experience:

Minimum 1-2 years' experience working in a care setting with individuals experiencing disabilities, addictions, or mental health challenges. Experience planning and facilitating group activities, wellness programs, or therapeutic recreation initiatives. Familiarity with trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and strength-based approaches.

Skills & Competencies:

Empathetic, client-focused, and culturally competent. Creative program development and group facilitation. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Adaptable, self-directed, and able to work in a fast-paced environment. Strong organizational and time management skills. Proficient with documentation, Microsoft Office, and scheduling platforms.

Working Conditions

May be required to work evenings or weekends based on program needs. Combination of office and activity-based environments (indoor/outdoor). Occasional lifting or physical activity during group facilitation.
